Biyaking: Any Interest In Biking/Paddling Combo?

My primary sport is sea kayaking through the Chicago Area Sea Kayakers Association (CASKA), but I'm entering the biking world through reverse commuting by Metra and bike.

I wonder if there is any interest in the biking community for events that combine biking with kayaking.  For example, there is a kayak outfitter in Geneva, Illinois called Geneva Kayak Center.  I envision something like taking Metra to someplace where we could access a trail (e.g., Fox River Trail), biking to Geneva, kayaking for a few hours, and then returning to the city via Metra/pedaling combo.  

Many self-identified kayakers are interested in biking but I wonder if the reverse is true.

I'm curious to know if bikers have any interest in combining biking with some kayaking as I have described.

I was actually just out this morning on the maiden voyage of my inflatable kayak that fits into my bike trailer- I would be all about doing some kayaking and I am sure there are many other chainlinkers who would as well. If you do end up getting something together let me know- I would love to go along for the ride(s)...

Hey Tom...

Did you go to Canoecopia? I'm a volunteer canoe instructor with the Friends of the Chicago River. Our table was right next to CASKA at the event.

While my idea doesnt use kayaks, I was thinking of putting together a trip where by people ride bikes out to the Skokie Lagoons and then paddle back towards the city with their bikes in the canoes. If there is enough interest I'll put a trip together and put it on the calendar.

I would definitely be down for something like this. I used to kayak all the time when I was in Florida.

I prefer to think of it like a summer biathlon.

Love both. Don't get nearly enough opportunities to Kayak since moving to the city. All on board for an adventure. I think it would be better suited to a weekend trip, however. Too much stuff to cram into one day.

Love canoeing. I've only kayaked once, but would love to try it again.

Nothing better than being out relaxing on the water.

On a smaller scale, Chicago Canoe and Kayak runs what they call a pedal & paddle. Bike 4 miles and then kayak back down the river the 4 miles and they take your bike back for you. Might be a good start for folks just starting to paddle. See http://chicagoriverpaddle.com/bike.html

Thanks all for your comments. I'm going to contact the kayak outfitter in Geneva and see if I can put together a package of some sort. The Chicago Canoe and Kayak pedal/paddle option in the City is great, but I'm a regular on that stretch both in my kayak and on my bike. The Fox River trail from Elgin or Aurora or even Fox River Grove would make for a nice change of pace bike ride.

Does anyone know if there are Chainlink rules or restrictions on posting events like this? Appreciate any guidance.

Note to Nathan/Paul--I was at Canoecopia at the CASKA booth. The tall guy.

I was actually playing with the idea of a kayak/pedal circumnavigation of the northern hemisphere. will prolly never happen but its a possibility :-)
