there is already bike jousting.

 

Just ride directly at the bike salmon; they'll get the hint or a bruise.

 

My only rule is that I will never let them by on the inside.  If they want to ride on the wrong side of the street fine but they can go hang out in traffic.

"not always novices"? goggles face mask... all the gear. this post is laughable. if your wearing goggles and a facemask go ride a snowmobile! that bike lane is huge. you can fit 3 bikers side by side. the biker coming at you the wrong way is probably a stronger rider than you. pretend he or she isn't there and they will make adjustments while you pee your pants.

The last time I was in this situation I did the opposite.  I made eye contact with the person and started riding faster.  The guy got out of my way, but he tried to spit on me as I was passing.

Personally, I hate it when people DO signal when passing. Its way more likely to make me twitch my bike in an undesirable direction - if you're going to pass me, just size up our relative speeds and positions and do it.

I encounter the wrong way riders all the time along with the "silent passers" (those cyclists that sneak up from behind and pass within 1/4" of my left side or even right side with nary a word of warning). I admit I am a slow rider  and usually can avoid the "wrong way" bikers.  Sadly, I noticed that a lot of cyclists, at least on my commute, do not have much in the way of cycling manners, be it warning when passing or going the wrong way down one-way streets. My favorite is the angry stare I get like I am in the wrong for cycling the correct way in the bicycle lane and not wanting to yield the lane to those going the incorrect way.

There was a good 1/8 a mile (at least) when we noticed each other.  There was plenty of time to react if necessary.

I had a collision with a wrong way cyclist one morning-- he came at me fast, waving violently (there was no way to know whether he was indicating the direction he wanted me to go or the direction he intended to go); he went down and messed up his work clothes. I can't understand why you would speed up when the chance of colliding is about 50%?

Sure you can fit three. As long as one doesn't' mind being doored, and one doesn't mind be buzzed by cars that are way to close...
