bike to work week, a bike thief's dream!

Here's my thing, bike thefts are a really big problem, and every city it seems, including Chicago are really pushing this whole bike movement. But have you ever had your bike stolen, good luck getting help from the city trying to recover it. How simple would it be to set up sting operations to catch bike theives, or hit the swap meets all around the city to do just a bit of investigation. My thing is why should we subscribe to a movement like bike to work, this is a bike theif's paradise, and we do it like a dummy, and when your bike gets stolen, nobody's going to assist you. Screw that, the city needs to make some investment to us riders before we put our bikes at risk. They should do something like make some type of high security public bike racks. What are your thoughts?

You can't stop everything but a good lock and the proper way to lock it will go a long way.
#2 don't get that rad new bike and use a $10 lock or a cable lock, a pair of cutters slice through them.

U lock the back wheel and frame, lock the front wheel with a chain to the frame, and possibly take the seat off.

Really? Dude, I commute to work every day, all year. Use a u-lock and a cheap bike. Lock up right and pay attention when lockin' up.

Askin' the city is great. In theory that's what the ATA is for but since they've dumped bikes from their name who knows. The reality is bike theft is not going to be a big priority cause it's a low value/non-violent crime that would likely result in a misdemeanor charge and the crook not showing up to court anyway.

Ignore bike to work week, try bike to work life and relax a little. And if you catch a crook kick his ass then call the cops. The cops are on your side. :-)

Bring the bike and park it inside your workplace. I'm sure there's room that will still be out of the way of others.
