Hot off the UIC College of Cycling listserv:

On October 4, just past midnight, UIC Police responded to a bicycle theft in progress at Thomas Beckham Hall, 1250 S. Halsted St. Responding officers observed and detained a suspect closely fitting the description of the offender.  Witnesses positively identified the offender, who was arrested.  A search recovered burglary tools used to cut bicycle locking cables.  During processing the offender became combative and injured two officers who both required medical attention.  Stevie Slater, 50, of West 14th Street, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, one felony count for possession of burglary tools, two misdemeanor counts of resisting and one count of attempted theft.

LOL, bike theft isn't a big deal most of the time to the MAN -but run from a cop and maybe struggle a little and all of a sudden it's a felony or two.

Priorities...

+!  It's too bad I don't live, study or work in/near UIC.

Unfortunately I have to deal with the results of living in and with the City of Chicago proper.

Maybe someday those clowns will take bike theft seriously.  Until then, not so much...

That would be a fair statement in regard to CPD but UIC police do prioritize bike theft, bless their hearts.

Maybe if more bike thieves were caught, it would discourage bike theft in general. Right now, it's practically a risk-free crime.
