Yesterday I witnessed a cyclist crash on Milwaukee, right over the expressway. His chain popped off and he took a nasty spill. He was OK enough, but asked that I call an ambulance. His foot had a huge, bike greased gash.

When the ambulance came, I offered to lock his bike near the crash and give him my key, so he could recover it later. There was't much time, so I dashed across the street to lock to a traffic sign. It seemed secure.

This morning, he was looking for the bike, and it seems to be gone. It wasn't a fancy bike, and it was obviously dinged up. I used a u lock around the front wheel and frame. I wonder if I was not supposed to park it there. What seems more likely--did someone from the city remove it? Or was it just stolen?

Of course, I feel horrible about it. What should I have done differently?

The CTA will cut locks if you lock up to their signs. Not sure about any others.
I'm not trying to be a jerk, but maybe you weren't looking at the right overpass? Only reason I say this is I saw a bike right on the bridge, maybe a brown cruiser with the chain dangling with what looked from a distance like a fagghetaboutit ny lock, large one. Locked to a sign. Seemed out of place. Pretty sure it was the overpass just north of green street. Anyway, I hope this helps.
Bob--thank you! That's being helpful, not jerky! Was this a recent sighting? I will call him back and have him take another look. When he called maybe he wasn't looking in the right place. He must have been pretty shaken up yesterday, so maybe didn't remember the exact location. I did check, I think, to make sure it wasn't a sucker pole. I had forgotten about the CTA signs.
Shortly after 11:00AM. South side of street.
Oh, yeah, there's those two overpasses on Milwaukee, which can be confusing, especially if you were shaken up by an accident.

Thanks for everyone's help and eyes. I did call the person whose bike it is, and I hope he gets it soon. . . .and that it's not a CTA sign keeping it secure in the meantime.
The bike has been recovered. Case closed. Thanks a ton. Huzza to the biking community and Chainlink.
