I have to go to the Cook Country Criminal Court (26th and California) tomorrow for jury duty. Doing a quick drive by with google street view I didn't see any bike parking near the court house, just lots of bare sidewalk and prison fencing. Is there any parking near there, or am I better of taking the roundabout CTA route?

I think there is a set of racks once you go up the stairs (10-year old recollection from attending the Tommy McBride trial in 2001). Otherwise, not much to lock to out on the sidewalk.

What's the "roundabout CTA route?"

The Blue Island bus rocks.

If you zoom on the plaza between the buildings I think you can see the racks peeking out on the right.

I seem to remember seeing bike racks near the parking garage ~2 years ago when I was there for jury duty, but I woosed out and drove on what turned out to be a very rainy day.

I took the 9 and the 60 twice yesterday-- it'll be faster than you think.

Be aware that they've moved the #60 stop a bit further SW on the west side of Ashland due to construction.

Give me your starting point and I'll give you your dream route :-)

Most of Google's route suggestions involved either 2 buses and a train, or 2 trains and a bus. I tweaked it a little bit and got it down to 2 buses (the 9 and the 60) which isn't so bad.

I usually take the pink line and walk 4 blocks there.  But, let me know if there are bike racks!

That's pretty painless.

Augusta west to Oakley.

Oakley south to Roosevelt (cul-de-sac.)

Cross Roosevelt and continue SW on Ogden (inner blvd).

Cross Western, turn left at the light before California (Washtenaw.) Take that all the way south to 25th.

25th w. to California Blvd or Cal Ave. south ---across 26th to courthouse.

I think California Ave.  is still closed at 24th for some water work, but if you just wanted to take Ogden to California you could muscle your way through.

I'm starting at Division and Noble. The 9 to 60 looks like a winning route, but I'll see what you come up with. If you don't go through the Loop then you're doing better than Google.

there are bike racks across the street (California) at the parking garage. Be careful though - you are only allowed to bring in limited personal items. Cell phones, iPods, etc. are not allowed and the lockers you must stow these items in are a pain in the A#$. I was there for a meeting 2 years ago and the Cook County Sherrif's deupties were making smart alek comments while they were scanning my bike helmet (wtf) and (empty) water bottle. I recommend the CTA.

I had jury duty yesterday so I thought I'd update this thread with useful and accurate information.

First, to Dan's post above-- nobody seemed to have any trouble bringing in cell phones and iPods-- in fact there was a designated area in the jury waiting area for people who needed to have conversations so others would not have to listen. I passed the day breezing through episodes of a cable show I've been catching up on on my Nano. Laptops are fine too.

The things they get antsy about are things that can be used as a weapon. I heard them asking about something that looked like a screwdriver in one man's bag.

Then, to bike parking-- they've completely removed the parking that used to be by the entranceway-- the entire plaza is clear. There are two underutilized city racks at the street close to the entrance.

I walked over otherwise you'd see at least one in use in this pic:

Click on it and the bike racks magically become visible.

I believe there is some no parking signs on 26th near the Popyes that you can lock up to. On a side note, be sure to bring some hand sanitizer the place is filthy.

Can't resist posting this-- one of my faves from the Daily News photo archive site:

Looking north from about 28th and California (used to be called Marshall Boulevard all the way down to Western Boulevard.)

The dark tree on the left is about where the courthouse entrance is now; the Kimball Piano and Organ factory is about where the visitor parking garage is now. The church steeple still stands at 23rd and California.
