(bike) locked against your will - what do (did) you do?

So yesterday I am preparing to go home - start the routine of unlocking my bike. Just as I am about to scoot away I notice something a little out of the ordinary. The bike I am parked next to has locked his bike, and included my bike in his secure lock job.


While I am grateful he wanted to include me in the secure arms of his kryptonite chain embrace, I couldn't help but be extremely annoyed at my misfortune.

Yes I know it was a mistake. Let me get that out of the way.

Despite that - It was freaking annoying as hell and I had to spend $10 on metra fares getting home and back to work, not to mention the logistical problems it caused for me and my coworkers.

Have you ever done this? Been a victim? Had we an external power source we were ready to grind this bad boy off and you'd be out a bike lock. Discuss.

Fortunately for me, the only time this has happened it was 1) with a cable lock and 2) the person to whom it belonged came out just as I was ready to really get upset.  I took the opportunity to politely tell her that a cable lock on a bike in Chicago was really not the most secure way to lock her bike. She seemed quite surprised to hear that I could have cut it off in a few seconds with a pair of bolt cutters. :-)

Someone locked my friend's brake cable by mistake once. I was able to disconnect the brake to free the bike and then re-connect so she could stop. She left an angry note on the person's bike.

At school I once almost locked someone's bike up with mine by accident. Thankfully I noticed before walking away.

Good for you to turn an inconvenience into an educational opportunity. I wish it had been a cable - I'd have snipped it in two seconds.

I was in a bar playing trivia and a man came in saying someone locked a bike to his bike.  The second bike was not locked to the rack, just the bike.  After an announcement was made and a wait of several minutes, he walked off carrying both bikes.

Ooooh man - vigilante style. The issue I have here is that I see this person's bike nearly every day, and I see this guy probably once every three months so I know if I did something crummy to his bike it'd eventually get back to me and my bike is worth like 15 of his bikes.

I'd still like a reimbursement for my metra fare from the dude.

"he walked off carrying both bikes." -- good move. The bike locked to his could have been a ploy to get him to leave the bike for the night, and return to find it gone.
