The Bicycle Portraits project was initiated by myself, Stan Engelbrecht (Cape Town, South Africa) and Nic Grobler (Johannesburg, South Africa) early in 2010.
Please visit http://kck.st/c09uOF and help us bring the Bicycle Portraits project to life. Pledge / pre-order now and own a copy of our adventure...
We are raising funds through the Kickstarter pledge-for-reward fundraising initiative - if someone pledges $50 they are essentially pre-ordering a copy of the book. If they are pledging $250 they will get a copy of the book and their name will appear on a special page in the book. If we do not meet our funding target the project will sadly be cancelled…
Whenever we can, together or separately, we’re on the lookout for fellow commuters, and people who use bicycles as part of their everyday work, to meet and photograph. We’re finding out who rides bicycles, why they ride bicycles, if and why they love their bicycles, and of course why so few South Africans choose bicycles as a transport option. There is no specific range of questions asked, we'd rather just establish a conversation around the rider’s life and where his or her bicycle fits into it. Being avid cyclists ourselves, this project is as much an investigation into South African bicycle culture as it is an excuse for us to ride our bikes and take photographs. We are raising the funds to turn this project into a self-published full-color hard-cover photographic book ( similar to a previous book I've done, 'African Salad' - www.dayonepublications.com ). We'll be shooting the entire project from our own bicycles while traveling around the country - this will enable us to meet everyday South Africans out there while they use their bicycles.
