Saw a terrible accident while running on the Lakefront trail today, right where Wilson intersects with the path. Saw a cyclist on the ground, appeared to be unconscious, blood dripping down his face. He was wearing a helmet. I didn't witness the actual crash so I don't know exactly what happened, but I did see a minivan with its hazard lights on just a little down the road.

If anyone knows what happened and knows if the cyclist is/will be okay, I'd appreciate it.

Those intersections with Montrose, Wilson, and Lawrence are terribly dangerous and I really hope they are fixed when the north part of Lake Shore Drive gets its rehab. I almost got hit myself at Montrose just Friday by a car turning right without looking.

Was this during the CARA ready to run 20 miler? There also was the 5K9 run/walk up there. It got kinda dicey on the LFP today, but there were cops at that intersection stopping automobile traffic for the run groups/races.

The CARA run was already done in that area (I was running with a different group) but the traffic cops were still out there, presumably for the K9 run/walk. That makes it even scarier to me; there were actually cops directing traffic and this still happened.

I was on the lakefront trail this afternoon doing a small charity ride, and I remembered why I avoid it like the plague. In addition to the divvy riders, the small kids, the roller bladers, and the other usual hazards, one of the racing assholes passed me so close I could feel his arm brush my shoulder, no warning and almost causing a four bike pile up in the process. I'm not surprised that someone ended up injured.

Can we please not start ANOTHER thread on how cyclists in lycra are a menace? This thread is about a bike CAR accident and I am pretty sure where they were both wearing had nothing to do with it. I hope the cyclist is ok and I wish him/her a speedy recovery.

I didn't mention what anyone was wearing. I don't have a problem with peoples' sartorial choices while biking. I was just mentioning that at the same time when the OP saw a horrific crash, I came close to having one myself, because of someone who chose to use a crowded bike path as his personal racing track. But it appears I've hit a nerve.

x2

There are just as many a-holes in street clothes riding hazardously as there are a-holes in lycra, maybe even more.

They can be identified by their behavior.

yes. amen. a$$holes come in all colors, shapes and sizes. and yes : everyone has one and is entitled to his/her opinion. but no one wants to hear it. happy monday

I saw someone in professional casual dress on a Divvy bike this morning, but he was wearing an aerodynamic TT helmet.  I blame the chainlink, he was covering all bases to avoid being labeled.

Also, REALLY wish I had my phone out to grab a pic.  Seriously, full teardrop aero time trial helmet on a Divvy.

Did he have a sleeve?

A sleeve? it was a short sleeve button down shirt, but I don't think that's what you mean...
