Anyone have experience buying tickets from scalpers at a show?

Itching badly to see the Phoenix aftershow at HoB tonight.

Have poked around craigslist but no positive responses from anyone selling at or near face value.  Absolutely will not pay more than face value . . .

So, if I show up there can I expect to see people selling tickets outside? Is there anything I need to know about fake and counterfeit tickets, e.g. is this a widespread problem and is there a way to avoid getting scammed?

Thanks, noplace else to ask this really.

I think there is a Salt and Pepper team that scalps tickets at most shows. They usually work the line before doors open. Your gonna pay a bit more than face value, scalpers got eat too... One trick to use is wait till the show starts and hit them up then, but be warned this can backfire if they sold all their tickets already. I wouldn't worry about counterfeits at smaller venues. They usually hit the bigger shows (Lolla) and sporting events...

best way to get seats very cheap (albeit a bit risky) :

-watch folks going into the show
-look for an odd number of ppl together (i.e. 3, 5, etc)
-chances are : they may have had a friend who couldn't make it (the 4th or 6th etc)
-ask them (casually) if they have an "extra single to sell"
-if they are going into the show : they will eat it as soon as they enter (read: any $$$ you give them is gravy)
-bring several 5 and 10 dolalr bills : make them an offer

this works best with larger venues and multiple night stands
I have actually gotten into rock shows free this way.

hustlers) : just ask to see the ticketmaster receipt. most folks always bring it with
