Had my chain jacked from my bike outside the Whirlaway last night. I'm amusing I'm not the only one. Be on the look out in Logan Square.

So just the chain was stolen? Not the rear wheel also? Did you have a quick link or did someone use a chain tool to remove it? I've never heard of just a chain being stolen.
Sorry this happened.
I'm curious...was it a single speed chain? a fancy color perhaps ?
That was my guess. So was it? Even a fancy color chain doesn't cost all that much.

Bah! Of course. The point being who would steal something that costs about $20 max, and takes a specific tool to remove? You can steal plenty of other parts off a bike that take less effort and are worth more. Just odd...

May not cost much buy ever try to ride without one? It sucks and you look like a weirdo pedalling air and Flintstoning it down the street....trust me.

Guessing that maybe some idiots thought it'd be funny, not that they stole it because they thought it was worth a lot. Kind of like peeing in a gas tank or similar asshole "prank" behavior.
I've never had the pleasure of imbibing at the Whirlaway Lounge , but there's definitely a criminal element prowling the bike racks outside of the place:
They probably used a chain tool or just took a screwdriver to pop off the master link. The folks at Boulevard today said I was the second person with a stolen chain to come in. And yes, just the chain. Everything else on my bike was intact. I didn't notice it was gone until I tried to pedal away and almost fell flat on my face.

Singe speed, just your typical $10 chain.

Maybe, but think about it: a chain probably only takes seconds to steal. Walk down Fullerton and steal every decent chain off every bike locked up on the sidewalk. It's about quantity. Steal a dozen chains in a night, resell them for $6-8 a pop, that's about $85 per night of thieving. Do that a couple nights a week and it starts to add up. I mean it's not worth it considering the amount of time and effort that would go into that. But, I'm thinking that these thieves don't think logically like you and I. It probably makes sense to them.

I'm sure it was done just to be mean. I bet the chains are tossed or played with, but not sold. True it is theft, but vandalism is the motive I think. Sucks to be sure and really no way to protect yourself from it. I'm not an Eastern Religion guy but Karma does seem to be the only comfort I could find in this sort of situation.
Maybe bike chains are the new cool hand-to-hand weapon of choice for bangers?
Next we'll see chain-wielding flashmobs terrorizing hipsters for their skinny jeans while they ride their now chainless push-bikes up and down Milwaukee street
