The Chainlink

So far my longest trip has been 36 miles, but I'd like to work my way up to a century sometime by the end of the summer.  In a few weeks I would like to head up to Cary, IL.  I have family there so it is an easy place to crash and eat for the night.  And if I'm exhausted the next day, I can take a Metra back to the city.

Any comments on the suggested Google route here: http://bit.ly/cgL8SP ?

I've ridden the first 50 miles of that route and its perfectly good for that stretch. As for the last ten miles, I don't think you even have much of a choice except that route (that's suburban planning for you).

And alternate route would be to take the IPP/Great Western Trail to the Fox River Trail, which will get you to Crystal Lake, then get to Cary from there somehow.
Thanks. I figured the first 50 were good, but the last 10 are less certain. Maybe someone will know the area up there better -- I've only driven/Metra before and it is a completely different route.

I'll check out Google Street View and at least see if one potential path has more shoulder space or something. For some reason the IPP/Great Western Trail looked much less appealing.
I think going in through Island lake is your best bet.

I'm from Cary too and thinking about doing a ride out there later this summer, so maybe use Map My Ride or something to document what you end up doing. Good luck!
I don't know the western area too well (roads after Millennium Trail) but it looks like you're on them for a short enough distance for it to be pretty safe.

And the Millennium Trail looks awesome.
