An iOS app put together by Recyclebank and supported by Transport for London will allow walkers and cyclists to earn points, which can be exchanged for discounts for shops and services

Re:route, once downloaded to your iPhone, invites you to input the start and end points of a journey, and will then recommend a variety of travel options, including walking, cycling, and public transport. After you arrive at your destination (the app tracks your progress with GPS), you'll be given five Recyclebank points, and shown how many calories you've burned, and how much carbon dioxide you've "saved" by opting for a cleaner mode of transport.

Once you begin to accumulate points, you can spend them on a variety of discounts and offers from Recyclebank's partners, which include Marks & Spencer, Planet Organic, and Champneys. You can find the full list on Recyclebank's website. For example, 75 points will give you a £5 discount when you spend more than £25 on food, wine and flowers at M&S.

Jonathan Hsu, the company's CEO, told Wired.co.uk: "Re:route takes the digital assets that already exist for London's transport network to create a digital platform that deepens and broadens user engagement while helping London achieve important sustainability goals through the development of smarter infrastructure."

He added: "We've worked hard to make Re:route an easy-to-use app so that people can easily travel around London on foot or on bike, and get rewarded for it."

TfL's director of planning, Ben Plowden, added: "TfL is supporting Re:route because it supports our wider efforts to encourage more people to consider cycling and walking as quick and convenient ways of getting around the city. More people cycling and walking will help to reduce congestion on our roads and on our busy public transport network. An initiative like Re:route is a great way to help TfL achieve these goals."

Grab the app from the App Store. An Android version, we're assured, will be launched in the "coming months".
