I gotta get out and see my grandma.. Im departing Crystal Lake and arriving in Carol Stream. My route will be the Prairie Path in Mchenry County(CL) - Fox River Trail - Illinois Prarie Path(Elgin Branch) - Great Western Trail - arrive Carol Stream.

I have yet to ride these trails/paths. Do they all flow into each other seamlessly? I hear there is some street riding in Elgin, does anyone know how to go from the Prairie Path to the Fox River Trail? Is there proper signage to get onto the GWT? I think that is all I need to know esides any closures anyone knows about that hasnt been reported yet as it should all be trail except for part of Elgin..

Check out http://www.bikely.com/ and google maps.

You should be able to figure it out quite easily.
Also, check the CBF bike map. If you don't have it, I can look later on this evening.
Is this what you were referring to? http://www.cityofchicago.org/Transportation/bikemap/keymap.html

No sorry, the CBF map is a bit more extensive for routes in the 6-county area.
Hope this isn't too late for you... as it has been 6 days.

The Fox River Trail --> IL Prairie Path split is pretty well marked, from what I can remember. If my memory serves me right, the split occurs right at the edge of the Fox River. The FRT runs south over a particularly dangerous wooden plank bridge, while the IPP forks immediately southeast.

There may or may not be signs in the area letting you know that the FRT is closed due to the Stearns Road Bridge project. This should not affect your route.

The IPP --> Great Western Trail split is also well marked; there is a sign board, and you actually have to turn to stay on the IPP. There is a distance board for the GWT. However, it's easiest just to look for the sign that says "Prince Crossing Road", and know that way that you should continue straight ahead.

Some info for anyone still interested. The Prairie Path looks to be open through Kane Co., and the Fox River Trail closure is futher south than where the Elgin Branch of the I.P.P. joins the Fox in Elgin. Coming from Elgin, at Prince Crossing Road go straight ahead to be on the Great Western Trail, follow the trail to the right (south) that then heads southeast to stay on the I.P.P. toward Wheaton. The county has a lot of countywide (YOU ARE HERE) signs along the way, just in case any of you city folk wanna come way out here to the country, hee haw!
