*SOLD* 22" 1972 Schwinn Sports Tourer single-speed project bike

I bought this with the idea of fixing it up but I've finally come to terms with the fact that it's just too small for me.

It's a 1972 Schwinn Sports Tourer, 22" frame (if I'm measuring correctly), chrome-moly tubing, made in Chicago. The frame is fillet-brazed--Sheldon Brown's site has a nice article about the fillet-brazed Schwinns here: http://sheldonbrown.com/schwinn-braze.html. Lots of scrapes and scratches in the paint. It was converted to a single-speed simply by removing the derailleur (that is, the original hub with its many sprockets is still there)

It is nominally rideable, but could definitely use work. The brakes are pretty sluggish (no idea if it needs adjustment, new pads, new brakes). The tires and tubes should definitely be replaced. The (cheap, Schwinn-branded but definitely not original) saddle doesn't like to stay at the same angle.

The bike is in Edgewater. I'm happy to answer any questions.

You are not measuring correctly. Please don't get me excited like that! :)

Sheldon says:

"The old standard system was to measure from the center of the bottom bracket to the very top of the seat tube."

Which should be close enough for our purposes.

You could ask for more and probably get it. Those frames are highly coveted by a subset of crazy old bike collectors/re-habbers (I include myself in that group).

I don't doubt you're correct, Eli, but Tony seems more knowledgeable about these things than me, at least. I am Interested in the ride, though.

The center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube (the top of the silver ring into which the seat post goes) is the dimension I measured at 22". I'm using a tailor's cloth measuring tape (all I have that is longer than a ruler) so there may be some stretch, but it shouldn't be much. What makes you think that I am measuring it wrong?

It actually measures about 22 1/4" but I figured that was due to a little curve in the tape.

I was attempting to follow the old Schwinn sizing diagram here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/661072-How-to-measure-my-V...

I would trust my tape measure over some random guy on the internet! I said it was incorrect because the head tube looked too small for a 22". But I'm just looking at the picture. Sorry!

This 22" looks the same (did I apologize yet?):

Oh my goodness that is tempting. I think it's a hair on the small side for me though.

FWIW, there's a solid inch or so of seat tube above where it meets the top tube--measuring the seat tube from the top of the intersection with the top tube to the center of the bottom bracket gets me around 21"--maybe that's why the head tube is shorter?

At any rate, I'm happy to take any additional measurements that are needed if anyone is on the fence about sizing.

Regarding price, I'm more interested in finding a good home for this than in getting top dollar (plus the paint and chrome are in a bit rougher shape up close than comes through in the picture). It's been sitting in my apartment all winter making me feel guilty for letting such a cool old bike go unused and un-cared-for.

I'm interested too. Let me know if others in line ahead of me don't work out.
