My wife has the mixtie version of this bike. It is a solid ride.
Anyone looking for a really affordable option to a 26" Long Haul Trucker (or the sort), this is a good choice. Old mountain bike geometry was closer to touring than to current mtn geometry. Same with the gearing. Plenty of braze-ons for racks and fenders, and clearance too! Most 4130 frames cost more than this. The mixte version is my favorite.
Yeah I bought a larger frame version a couple of weeks ago. Mine is a pretty crazy teal (?) with matching bars and stem. But there is some rust so I'm not sure I'll be able to leave the crazy paint color. It is hard to tell from this photo if this bike is the same color...
There is enough clearance to mount 700s, but then one is cutting it a bit close if one wants to install fenders. You'd also have to replace the brakes. I'm not sure what wheel size I'm gonna use. While I don't want to repeat teh fender clearance fiasco I had with my three speed conversion, I do really like the idea of standardizing (somewhat) on the 700. Mebbe a front drum brake and a rear coaster?

I will have this bike with me at the Winter Swap at UIC in March as well as this Nishiki BackRoads.......
Assuming you don't sell them in the meantime.
The Nishiki has potential to be a great commuter also. Look at all those eyelets for fenders and racks!
