Description

Break the Gridlock is resuming its "UnHappy Hours" starting this month, Jan 19, 7-9pm
at Quenchers. We will be scheming about how to shut down the car show.
There is talk of a ride and rally, including an appearance by the Kickstands,
Chicago's new pro-bike, anti oil dependency cheer-leading squad. Please
bring your ideas, and--I hope--willingness to help with the event (date
TBA--it's looking like 2/12 or 2/20) Many thanks to Jera for kicking
off the Kickstands and being a point person for the car show action.
Contact her at: lazylinepainterjera@gmail.com.

With rumors of the recession loosening its grip, let's remind folks that
they don't need to celebrate
by going out and buying (or coveting) a car. Check out this round up of
car ads  to get you motivated. Man's Last Stand? Puh-lease! http://dc.streetsblog.org/2010/12/13/ad-nauseam-2010-the-year-in-car-commercials/

Education is good. Protests or shutdowns need to be for some egregious time sensitive event,IMO. Cars are more a chronic thing and Chicago is one of the most progressive large (American) cities in terms of bike programs, mass transit but maybe the next generation will bike most places and only have a car for emergency trips, places trains don't go, vacations, because they live in rural area or what ever else.

I've started a "Slogans" thread.  Contributions encouraged.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. My hope is that the car show shut down event will have a positive feel to it--that we interact with attendees in the spirit of inviting them to think more about car-free and car-lite living. . . and also about the way cars are marketed to us. The fact that so many people in our culture are car-dependent does create problems for society, even factoring in "greener" cars: injuries due to crashes, water run off probs due to so much of our land being paved, sedentary living, etc.

Back to your example--I reckon I prefer a scenario of a walking, biking, transiting person having a muscle car they roll out sometimes to a person using a hybrid car for all their travel needs. Of course, every situation is different and I understand that there are many who must rely on their car most or all of the time. But there are plenty of folks who, with encouragement (and perhaps better transit services and bike infrastructure!), could convert more of their car trips to other modes.

Hope you can make it tomorrow--you could definitely influence the direction of this event via your participation.

I'm on the fence about this.

Growing up most of my life in the Detroit area I do love me some muscle cars BUT I don't own a car, if I owned a muscle car it certainly wouldn't be for daily use and they do have Hybrids, and I'm sure a few other non petrol type cars.
