No, this isn't about trying, after having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, to carry any message to alcoholics, or to practice any principles in all our affairs.
It's about trying to ride to Three Floyds every month this year.
We start by taking the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let me know where so we can look for you.
New beers since last time: Royal Brat, an extremely quaffable, severely mellow, aggressively tender, and belligerently sessionable English-Style Best Bitter; Immutable Dusk, a Cascadian Dusky Ale as unwavering in its beguiling flavor as its namesake; and Level Eater, a dark Dwarven session ale brewed with experimental hops, suitable for hoisting in the best of ale horns.
45 miles total if you take the Metra back, 70 if you ride both ways. 13-16 mph. We don't make many stops. We don't always stay together. My goal is to get there before they open (at noon), so we don't have to wait as long to get in (it's the second-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). Returning, there's no hurry. Bring money, a lock, lights since it's the shortest day of the year, water and snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago.
Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Metra schedule, Metra rules, and, to save us all a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

Snow and ice accumulations less than one inch.
Less than one inch of ice would be nice.
yep, it's looking more extreme again:
Mainly cloudy in the morning. Then a mix of wintry precipitation expected during the afternoon. High 34F. Winds NE at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 50%. Snow and ice accumulations less than one inch. |
better less than one inch than more, at least. the lakefront trail should be fine (where it's plowed). it's probably a good idea to stick to streets after that. and to take the metra back; the evening looks even more challenging:
Cloudy with a mixture of winter precipitation. Low 32F. Winds NE at 10 to 20 mph. Snow and ice accumulating 1 to 3 inches. |
the reader had suggestions for the less masochistic:
Society makes us feel weird and bad for sitting around in bars while the sun is still up (unless sports are on TV—then anything goes). On the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, you can feel good about hunkering down at your neighborhood bar when it's only four in the afternoon, because it's probably dark out. And you can't really be depressed about it when you're wasted! Check our neighborhood bar guide for locale suggestions.
This could prove to be some challanging conditions.
just fill it out online, thanks!
Weather is looking nice for the time of year with a few days above freezing in a row.
Bob, Do you just want us to fill out the waiver on line, or print it and bring along?
Partly cloudy skies during the morning hours will give way to occasional snow showers in the afternoon. High near 20F. Winds NNW at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 40%. Snowfall around one inch. |
