Average Speed: 10-12 MPH with rest stops planned along the way.
Skill level: Moderate ride / No drop
Gear: bike, lock, helmet, hydration, snacks and a camera
Ride with us to explore the Steelworkers life in South Chicago and Northern Indiana. We will first head South to our first point of interest The Steelworkers Park where we can explore the archeological ruins of The Ore Walls of the US South Steel Works. We will then head over the Ewing Avenue Bridge and pass by the smallest cemetery in Chicago housing The Tomb of Andreas von Zirngibl. This one-armed soldier fought Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. We will then head over to Calumet Park and visit the James P. Fitzgibbons Memorial Museum. Next, we will visit the Illinois–Indiana State Line Boundary Marker Obelisk which is the oldest monument in Chicago located at the Commonwealth Edison State Line Generating Plant. Our next leg of the tour we will bike down to Marktown’s Historic District which was once a master planned steelworker factory town and enjoy a walking tour hosted by Marktown’s preservationist and resident Paul Myers. We will also visit the Republic Steel Sculpture and the Memorial Day Massacre Plaque. On our return trip, we will head back over to the Steelworkers Park to a secret location to take in breathtaking views of the skyline of Chicago.

Steelworkers Pilgrimage Cycling Tour Final Update!
Please try and arrive at 7:45am at Daley Plaza so we can depart close to 8am. It will be a little windy from part of the direction we are heading so be sure to remember your cycling glasses. The good news is we will have a tailwind on the return trip which is always a treat.
Bring snacks and water to enjoy along the way until we grab a late lunch around 2pm. We will also have fruit and water waiting for us at The Historic Marktown site around noon.
Bring your bike lock, we will need to lock up our bikes a couple times.
Get ready to go on an awesome adventure, this particular one has been in the making for over a year!

Important information and safety tips for this Sunday's Steelworkers Pilgrimage Adventure Cycling Tour.
Bring water and snacks to stay hydrated and to munch on along the way.
Be sure to bring a u-lock and or other type of lock while we go on the walking tour portion and stop for lunch. (Lunch location will be announced tomorrow)
Please fill up your tires to the maximum air pressure recommended by the manufacturer to minimize pinch flats, tires under inflated are prone to this type of flat. Arrive early and we can make sure you have the proper inflation.
Be aware of your surroundings such as fellow cyclists, vehicles, joggers (especially wearing earbuds), walkers, tourists, and pets. You may see them but they may not see or hear you coming.
If you see a hole, large crack, glass, or debri on the road please call it out so the cyclists behind you are aware.
Follow at a safe distance. Your front wheel shouldn't overlap the rear wheel of the person in front of you as this creates a serious hazard.
There are sections of the ride you may hear us announce "Please ride in a single file line!" This is to maneuver through a tight turn or around those pop-up baracads in park entrances that prevent vehicles from entering.
Use hand signals when stopping and turning.
Safely cross intersections. If you can't make the light, we will wait for you on the other side of the intersection.
Be alert, it's great to have conversations with people but remember to be aware of potential hazards.
Most importantly enjoy the tour and have an awesome adventure!

What's an Urban Adventure Cyclist to do on a rainy day like today? Brush up on his Chicago's Southeast Side History of course! The nicely detailed spiral bound publication was put together by high school students attending George Washington High School (Chicago) circa. 2000. I picked it up at Southeast Chicago Historical Society which is one of our many stops on the Steelworkers Pilgrimage Cycling Tour as we pedal our way down to Marktown. We are only 2 weeks away.
