Description

Come join the Chicagoland Beer Exploration Society Explorers on a ride to 3 breweries in the north burbs!

The Farmer's Almanac is predicting peak foliage for northern Illinois. This will also be the only free weekend I have since I'll be back in school.

We'll meet at the Logan Square Monument for a 9:30am departure. Head over to the Des Plaines River Trail and take that to Firkin in Libertyville for lunch and beer. This first leg is 40 miles in total. Firkin is not a brewery but comes highly recommended and has an excellent beer list. There's a 5:10pm Metra in Libertyville for those that want to head home after Firkin.

For those continuing, we'll head 3 miles to Tighthead Brewing for some more beers. Tap room only but we should still be good from lunch.

And finally, we'll take the north shore bike path about 9 miles to Lake Bluff Brewing.

Lake Bluff metra stop is right around the corner to get us home or ride 30 miles back to Chicago on the McClory and Green Bay trails.

Total distance including getting to the Des Plaines River Trail should be a bit over 50 miles. Be aware that the DPRT is not paved. Tires at least 28mm in width should be fine as the surface is fairly smooth.

Departure will be 9:30am sharp. We'll be picking up the DPRT at Bryn Mawr and East River Road via this route for anyone running late. Here's the route once we get on the trail.

Minimum average speed: 10mph

Bring: Bungee for Metra, Water, Snacks, Lock, Lights, and a Spare Tube

Yeah 7:21 and 10:51 trains are the only options from Lake Bluff. Plan is to get to Lake Bluff by 6:30 which leaves enough time for a pint and possibly a growler fill.

Rough and tumble timeline:

Depart: 9:30am

Get to Trail (10 miles): 10:45am

Nature Center (10 miles): arrive at noon for a 15 minute break

Firkin (20 miles): 2:30pm - leave at 4 to go to Tighthead

Tighthead (3 miles): 4:30pm  leave at 5:30 to go to Lake Bluff

Lake Bluff (9 miles): 6:30pm

The timeline is for a bit slower than 10 mph. We have 2 other options besides: One is to go straight to Lake Bluff from Firkin although I liked Tighthead and would hate to exclude them. Another is to leave at 9am.

This looks neat.  I want to make an effort to check out the autumn colors this year.

Hi there Marcus no sweat! Looking forward to seeing you again!

I thought about that myself and plan on leaving a bit earlier. 9:30 sharp-ish rather than 10:20 like last time. Also maybe not spending as much time as we did at the nature center on the way up. Hoping to buy an extra hour all together.

We can play by ear when we get to Firkin. I really liked Tighthead's beer so I'd hate to leave it out.

Looking forward to meeting the group somewhere along the Des plaines River Trail (I live in Lake Bluff). Just wondering, if, since we didn't make it back to Lake Bluff Brewing on the last trip, if we should head straight to LBBrewing after lunch at Firkin. Would cut out roughly 6 miles, and save a bunch of time. Remember last time?

The trail surface is pretty much hard packed dirt and crushed gravel. It's fairly smooth and for the most part you can go almost as fast as on the street or paved roads. You just want to have a bit of tire on your bike. I think the tires on your bike should be ok.

Wait. What do you mean not paved?

Cool hope you can make it!

This sounds fun. I'd be interested in doing this.
