Description

Come join the Chicagoland Beer Exploration Society Explorers on a ride to 3 breweries in the north burbs!

The Farmer's Almanac is predicting peak foliage for northern Illinois. This will also be the only free weekend I have since I'll be back in school.

We'll meet at the Logan Square Monument for a 9:30am departure. Head over to the Des Plaines River Trail and take that to Firkin in Libertyville for lunch and beer. This first leg is 40 miles in total. Firkin is not a brewery but comes highly recommended and has an excellent beer list. There's a 5:10pm Metra in Libertyville for those that want to head home after Firkin.

For those continuing, we'll head 3 miles to Tighthead Brewing for some more beers. Tap room only but we should still be good from lunch.

And finally, we'll take the north shore bike path about 9 miles to Lake Bluff Brewing.

Lake Bluff metra stop is right around the corner to get us home or ride 30 miles back to Chicago on the McClory and Green Bay trails.

Total distance including getting to the Des Plaines River Trail should be a bit over 50 miles. Be aware that the DPRT is not paved. Tires at least 28mm in width should be fine as the surface is fairly smooth.

Departure will be 9:30am sharp. We'll be picking up the DPRT at Bryn Mawr and East River Road via this route for anyone running late. Here's the route once we get on the trail.

Minimum average speed: 10mph

Bring: Bungee for Metra, Water, Snacks, Lock, Lights, and a Spare Tube

That sounds about right Tom. We'll keep an eye out for ya.

I may try to pick up the ride near Bryn Mawr and Milwaukee. I figured it would be around 10:00 when you would be getting to that point.

Thanks Robert! Yeah I'm hoping most of the leaves are still on trees in nice pretty colors.

unfortunately will be at a meeting all day. have fun! and be safe (wet leaves can be really slippery).

No problem PJ there's a 5:10 Metra and the station is a block or two from Firkin. Can't go much worse than a beer ride as your first!

I probably will have to catch a train back into town from Firkin, but this is my first outing with any Chain Link members! Looking forward to some brews!

Oops sorry to misspell your name Marcus. Had a nice bomber after studying last night so I was done thinking.

Don't sweat it Yvonne! I gave the ride some wiggle room and I don't want to drop anyone. Worst case there's the train in Libertyville back to Chicago. I'm also hoping it doesn't get down to 30 anything until we're on metra going home!

Decisions are tough Marucs!

I wouldn't mind even starting at 9:15am or 9am. I realize the pace is slow but it's sometimes nice to have a quick stretch break. Or given that the temperature may drop to 37 degrees a quick blow-nose stop. It's hard to say because I'm a little out of shape. But I have been killing it lately on the bicycle. So I'd like to give this ride a try. If I'm too slow the first ten miles I'll just drop myself from the ride.

Tighthead vs. Lake Bluff. Life is good.

On reflection of last trip, maybe one round too many at TH kept us from seeing LB. People, be forewarned — TH will do that — mesmerizing you with variety, knowledge and great beer!

Also, please note, LBBrewing is .5 blocks from the LB Metra station. Easy.
