Description

Come join the Chicagoland Beer Exploration Society Explorers on a ride to 3 breweries in the north burbs!

We'll meet at the Logan Square Monument for a 10am departure. Head over to the Des Plaines River Trail for about 25-30 miles to Mickey Finn's Brewery in Libertyville for lunch and beer.

From there we'll head 3 miles to Tighthead Brewing for some more beers. They don't have a kitchen there but we should still be good from Mickey Finn's.

And finally, we'll take the north shore bike path about 9 miles to Lake Bluff Brewing.

Lake Bluff metra stop is right around the corner to get us home or ride 30 miles back to Chicago on the McClory and Green Bay trails.

Total distance including getting to the Des Plaines River Trail should be a bit over 50 miles.

EDIT: We'll be picking up the River Trail at Oakton.  We'll leave a few minutes late for stragglers but route will be Kedzie to Elston to Bryn Mawr to the street that parallels Northwest Hwy to Busse to Oakton.

Exact route to the Des Plaines River Trail is TBD. In addition to relying on the reports of fellow chainlinkers, I'll check out the trail on the weekend before for its condition. That will determine where we pick up the trail.

Thanks to everyone for coming out and making this an awesome ride! We'll do this again in October when the trees are changing color.

Hey Clark. I expect to get to the DPRT around 11:15 or 11:30 at the latest.  We usually leave a few minutes late and it'll be about an hour ride to get there.  Glad that I rode the worst of it!  It wasn't that bad at all so long as you kept an eye out.

Both Mickey Finn's and Tighthead said they should have no problem accommodating us when I emailed them.

This sounds like a blast, Rich! I will be at the DPRT and Oakton at 11:00 am. Ya'll should be there about that time. If your ahead of schedule, I'll catch ya' on my way down there. 22 miles of this route on the DPRT was my commute for a few years and the section you pre-road includes the worst we'll see on this trail.

Thanks for getting in touch with Lake County FPD Marcus!

I have a good street route planned as backup north of Dundee just in case. There were a few minor hazards I had to deal with when I rode the trail from Oakton to Dundee last Saturday. Some sections of trail had some ruts but there was almost always a smooth line to get through. The rutted sections weren't very long either. A few muddy patches were too thick to ride through as well but none meant dismounting for more than a few paces and even then my feet weren't sinking into the mud. There were also about 5 down trees that meant dismounting to clear cyclocross style!

Kevin I rode the trail on my winter hybrid with 700 x 32 Conti touring tires. Averaged about 12mph even with the hazards mentioned above. Minimum 28 width tires with some tread should be fine. I'd say the stretch of trail I rode is just a bit rougher than the IPP but not by much.

After your pre-ride Rich, any restrictions on suitable bicycles? Touring? Mountain?
