Description

No, this isn't about making direct amends to the people we've harmed whenever doing so is possible and won't injure them or others.

It's about riding to Three Floyds and boosting our cognitive function every month this year! There's a somewhat consistent schedule -- usually the 4th Saturday of the month -- and you can qualify for the F-12 Award.

September is National Century Month, so this step is a century -- if you ride a little extra before or after. The ride takes the lakefront trail south from the Clock Tower. You can join up anywhere along the trail. Just let the group know to make sure you get picked up.

35 miles to Three Floyds + 10 miles to Flossmoor Station = 45 miles. Take the Metra Electric home or ride another 25 miles to Imperial Oak's Oak-toberfest = 70 miles. Ride another 5 miles to Brookfield = 75 miles and take the BNSF home or another 25 miles to Revolution's Oktoberfest, the new Beer Temple, and back to the clock tower = 95 miles.15-18 mph. I like to get to Three Floyds before they open at 11:00 (it's still the eighth-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). Bring money, government-issued ID, a lock, lights since we're staying out late, water and snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago.

Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Metra Electric train schedules, BNSF train schedule, Bikes on the Metra, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

PS: I give these rides these names because I find them humorous in an ironic way. It's not my intent to make light of addictions, efforts to recover from addictions, or 12-step peer support groups like AA. If you're trying to drink in moderation, we'll support you. If you're trying to abstain, you may want to give this ride a pass.

and, finally, new and new-to-me (and not available in cans) @ revolution:

  • Ideology Esb
    Extra Special Bitter
This British-inspired extra special bitter was named after a Billy Bragg song. The Englishman is one of the most notable political singer/songwriters of our time. The style is more full-bodied and flavorful than the ‘Best’ or ‘Special’ Bitters we have done in the recent past (Adams’ Best, Poetic Justice, etc). – and it is a bit higher in alcohol than traditional British version. It has a rich copper color with a malt-dominant aroma. Notes of toasted malt, caramel, and dates are present from the use of CaraAroma and Special B malts. Dry-hopping with Styrian Goldings gives a spicy background in the aroma and the palate. The medium bitterness helps to balance out the malty sweetness.
    Alc. by vol. – 5.2%
    Bitterness - 35 IBUs

  • Farm to Fist
    Wet Hop IPA
Farm to Fist is a palate punching Wet IPA characterized by its bold, fresh hop flavors and aromas. A departure from our norm, this beer allows for a unique blend of herbal, citrus, and pine notes that can only be created by the hops' fleeting green resins and oils. Witness what happens when hops go from vine to beer in under four hours.
The harvest IPA is brewed with hops grown over at Hop Head Farms located in Baroda, MI.
    Alc. by vol. – 7.5%
    Bitterness - 75 IBUs

  • No Pun Required
    German-style Gose
This is another “Kettle Sour” beer, made with the addition of Lactobacillus in the wort ( we took advantage of the ‘Lacto’ cultures present in nonfat Greek yogurt). During a 24 hour period, the Lacto eats some of the sugars and produces the lactic acid, which is perceived on the palate as the tart acidity in the beer. After that, we boil the wort to kill all the Lacto- so that we don’t infect our brewery- and pitched a Kolsch yeast for the main fermentation of the beer… This is a Leipzig-style Gose, so it is brewed with 2row and wheat, and we added sea salt and coriander to the kettle, per tradition. Highly carbonated and refreshing!
    Alc. by vol. – 4.3%
    Bitterness - 10 IBUs

  • Working Mom
    Barrel-Aged Imperial Brown Ale
Our Imperial Brown was aged in Heaven Hill & Woodford Reserve for 9 months. It is wonderfully complex - notes of bourbon come through, married with chocolate, toffee, fruit, and vanilla from the wood. These flavors follow along to the palate where you will get some lingering hop bitterness and the alcohol warmth that you would expect from a beer this big.
    Alc. by vol. – 13.5%
    Bitterness - 69 IBUs

  • VSOG
    Barrel-Aged Porter
This archived beer no longer in production.
    Alc. by vol. – 11.5%
