Description

Join us at Open Books for an evening with Bianca Mugyenyi and Yves Engler, co-authors of Stop Signs: Cars and Capitalism on the Road to Economic, Social, and Ecological Decay.

In their humorous and enlightening book, Canada-based authors Mugyenyi and Engler use a bus trip across the USA as a starting point for looking critically at the effects of cars on our environment and us.

The first part of the book deals with the impact of automobile use on pollution levels and global warming; the automobile’s contribution to sprawl and a divided society; and the hazards caused not only by traffic accidents, but from the sourcing of materials for and manufacture of vehicles themselves. The book continues with an analysis of capitalism itself and how intertwined it is with the auto industry, including media, advertising, and corporate and political power.

Stop Signs is disturbingly informative, yet humorous and surprising. "An anti-car, road-trip story, Stop Signs is a unique must-read for all those who wish to escape the clutches of auto domination."

FYI- took me a while to figure this out but Institute Place runs 1/2 block north of Chicago Ave-- this location is between Wells and Franklin.
