Why We Ride
Slow Roll Chicago is partnering with the Chicago Police Department’s 11th District CAPS Community Policing Office to bring the City of Chicago a family- and youth-focused ride in honor of peace on Chicago streets, utilizing the activity of bicycling to reduce violence on the Westside of Chicago and throughout the City. This ride promises to be an incredibly energetic ride as we celebrate youth achievement and mark the end of Slow Roll Chicago’s 2014 inaugural launch season.
Slow Roll Chicago's final community bicycle ride of 2014 takes us on a gorgeously picturesque route from the Westside of Chicago to Northerly Island and back again. We roll slow through the Lawndale, East Garfield Park, West Town, South Loop, and University Village neighborhoods. We roll slow pass many beautiful sites such as the United Center, UIC Campus, Medical District, Little Italy, and the Museum Campus. We stop at the wonderful Northerly Island to soak up a grand natural landscape within the urban megalopolis that is the City of Chicago. The ride will return to the CPD 11th District for a youth recognition event and a celebratory pizza party.
Slow Roll Chicago rides on the Westside of Chicago to create a deeply transformative experience for the young people who ride with us as well as everyone involved.

All you experienced winter riding Chainlinkers, this is not for you! It might be for the friends you invited who don't normally ride in cooler weather, though. :-)
Hey Mama, it’s cold outside but I want to ride with Slow Roll. What do I wear?
Simple answer: Loose layers from head to toe!
Not enough information? Okay, okay.
You do not need to run to the bike shop for “technical gear”. You have things in your own drawers and closets that will keep you warm. And you don’t need bulky things, either. You will be warmer with a few thin layers than with one bulky anything.
Loose layers allow air pockets that retain heat. Tight clothes push the air out and you will be cold.
First pay attention to head, neck, hands, and feet. You have heard it before—we lose a LOT of heat through our uncovered heads. At the very least put a thin cap under your helmet. You can use a combination face mask/cap if you have one. Put a scarf around your face and neck. It does not need to be heavy. You just want something to hold heat in and block wind. Cold neck and face means you will be unhappy.
Wear gloves under mittens. If you have soft gloves and soft mittens you will be able to grab your handlebars and brakes, and you will be able to shift. If you only have gloves, try to find a thinner glove to layer under bigger gloves. Borrow gloves from someone with bigger hands than you have, and put your own gloves under the bigger gloves.
Wear the biggest shoes or boots that you own, and layer socks. Don’t make your shoes or boots too tight. Tight shoes/boots make cold feet. Looser shoes/boots let those hand air pockets form. If all you have is sneakers—don’t laugh—put a piece of newspaper inside the sneakers over your socks. It blocks the wind.
Tops and bottoms—yep layers. On the outside, wear something that will block wind. Even if it is not a windy day we create our own wind when we ride. If you have long underwear type clothes, make that your first layer. Tights are good. They don’t have to be fancy tights! If you own wool sweaters/jackets/pants, put those on over the first layer. Thin layers are better than thick layers. Jeans let in the wind. Try to put something under them if you are going to wear jeans.
So let’s layer up and RIDE on Saturday, November 15.
This evening, please watch Chicago Tonight on WTTW Channel 11 for a cool story on Slow Roll Chicago by our friend and fellow cyclist, Jay Shefsky ...
