Description

Having kids does not mean you have to trade your bike in for a car.  Local families share tips on raising transvelopedes, ie children who know how to get around by transit, biking and walking. Tricky issues such as keeping your cool while having to layer both you and your child for winter excursions will be addressed.  This is just one of the many workshops featured at this weekend's Chicago Cycle Swap: http://www.activetrans.org/swap

Presenters include:

  • Sarah R. Graff. This is her first bike winter *and* she is doing it with her 3 year old daughter.
  • Jane Healy. Board president of the Active Transportation Alliance, she bikes with her own three children, and gets the neighborhood kids in the saddle too.
  • Doug Hinckley & Jennifer James. Two parents who ride everywhere in  Chicago with their three children 9, 6, and 2, and authors of  chicargobikes.blogspot.com
  • Gina Kenny. In addition to working for the League of Illinois Bicyclists, she bike commutes with her four year old son in the southwest suburbs when not racing her mountain bike up and down area trails.
  • Facilitated by Gin Kilgore, Break the Gridlock Board President, LIB staffer, and car-free/mostly bike-dependent mom.

Also, right before this workshop is the debut of The Racketeers, an "all-girl bike collective experimenting with BMX bikes and dance. Exploring the world of choreography, music, bikes, tires, wheels, and tricks with endless possibilities." Come for the performance, stay for the workshops and linger to pick up gear at the swap!

oh no!  My two year old can live without car rides, but a NAP is imperative.  if you have another workshop like this at non-nap time, I'd love to attend.
