UPDATE
(7/12/12)
Thank you so much for making the ride a success. We had so many participants we ran out of food! With donations from Anshe Emet and Moishe House and your contributions we now have money for food, printing, etc. for our a future ride.
(7/6/12)
We are almost there! Only 3 days until we ride. At 10 am we will have snacks, coffee and a short tour at DIC. At 10:30 we are off! Anshe Emet and Moishe House are covering part of the cost for lunch at the clocktower in Lakeview around 12. We are asking $5 to cover the rest so everyone can eat. Any extra money will go towards planning and food for future rides. It will all be vegetarian. See you at 10 am at DIC!
(6/22/12)
We will meet at the Downtown Islamic Center at 10:00 am, ride by 3 synagogues and the American Islamic College in Lakeview East. We will end our ride with a picnic and conversation in a nearby park.
BACKGROUND
The Jewish-Muslim Community Building Initiative, (JMCBI) is partnering with The Chainlink to bring you a special interfaith experience. Join Jewish and Muslim friends for a tour by bicycle of some of Chicago's mosques and synagogues.
Everyone is invited!
On Sunday, July 8, Jews, Muslims, and all interested others will saddle-up for a leisurely group bike ride around Chicago. Along the route, riders will stop together at significant community landmarks like synagogues and mosques.
TheChainlink.org connects people in Chicagoland through bicycling.
JMCBI, an initiative of the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA), upholds the aim of bringing Jews and Muslims together to make a better, shared life in the Chicago area.
If you are interested in joining the planning team to create this ride, message Julie.
Comment
As we waited out an intense squall that began just before the pre ride the desk guy at the Downtown Islamic Center could not have been more accomodating. A few of us and our bikes waited inside and talked to him and a couple of the folks who were leaving from prayers. It was a good way to get started. As cyclists we had more skin showing that anybody else in the building. We may want to be mindful of modesty when we return next week.
FYI - We will have access to a tour of the building, snacks (maybe) and bathrooms before the ride.
JW has a good point. I agree.
We will do a Pre Ride to go over the route this Sunday at 1pm. We will meet outside the Islamic Center downtown (231 S. State) and ride the route going past our intended stops. Post here if you plan to do the Pre Ride. Otherwise, we will see you the following Sunday at 10am at the Islamic Center
If anyone would like to help before or day of we will need help with:
- spreading the word to your friends, family, synagogues, mosques, temples, churches, community groups, etc.
- ride leaders/crossing guards
I'm psyched for this ride. Lets astound the world with our camaraderie.
Shalom - Salaam - Peace
