Its camping time!! Please RSVP for the MAY edition of PITCHING A TENT, a camping trip to Illinois Beach State Park in Zion IL. We will, of course, be biking up there with our gear in tow, on paniers, and on our backs.

Metting place will be North Shore Channel Trail entrance at Lawrence & California.

You must RSVP for this event so we know how many campsites to get. They do not have group sites. Sites are limited to 5 adults and two tents.

Hey, hey, my friend Jill and I are for sure. She is driving down from Woodstock to Zion, if anyone is coming from that area and needs some stuff hauled.
Does anyone have a spot for one more tent before I attempt to secure an unnecessarily large last minute space?

what time are we leaving?

I know this is kind of last minute, and lots of people already know these things, but just wanted to give some advice to people packing their things.

You can pack your tents and poles seperately. This allows the tent to be in a smaller space which can then go in a pannier or back pack. The tent poles can then be strapped to your rake or even somewhere else on your bike. If you are sharing a tent with someone else, you can also share the job of carrying the tent this way.

Distribute the weight of your stuff as low as possible. If you have panniers, put the heavy stuff on the bottom.

If you are really ambitious and want to try it, here are some links for DIY panniers: http://cam.ucsd.edu/~spav/play/panniers.html

For comfort, it will be nice to have as much weight/heat off of your back as possible...use a rack if you have it. Bungie cords work very well to attach things to rack. Larger items like Tents, sleeping bags and sleeping pads can all be attached like this.

There is a grocery store right outside the entrance to the park so you can buy most food items there.

OI!! everytime this gets forgotten. Someone please arrange for a ghost story book. PLEASE!! We need to spook the shit out of eachother before we lay down to sleep.

Y'all have heard about the Illinois Beach State Park Mutant that has been seen running around, right? Legend has it that he single-handedly saved the Chicago area from a disaster by selflessly throwing himself into the reactor, sparring everyone from a complete nuclear meltdown. But rumors are that he was pushed into the reactor, as there is no evidence that would suggest throwing oneself into a reactor would actually spare a meltdown. Well, now his mutated soul is seeking revenge....at the campsite...
