Join Active Transportation Alliance and Streetsblog Chicago as we explore the Chicago Pedway, an overlooked layer of the city’s sustainable transportation network. This event is FREE and open to the public.
This network of indoor pedestrian pathways, including below-ground tunnels, street-level concourses and overhead skyways, covers about five miles and connects over forty city blocks. Tens of thousands of downtown workers use it every day to traverse the Loop without having to deal with inclement weather or the Loop’s hectic street traffic. For more background on the Pedway, check out this article by tour guide John Greenfield: http://newcity.com/2012/02/15/notes-from-the-underground-a-subterranean-safari-in-the-chicago-pedway/
DETAILS:
New route this year! We’ll meet up at Sweetwater Grille (225 N Michigan) at 5:30 pm for a quick drink, departing at 6:00, and then make our way down to the Pedway, passing by a subterranean Metra platform, the undulating glass of Millennium Station, a nice view of Lakeshore East Park, an underground Indian eatery, tropical fish tanks and more. We’ll then pop up from the Pedway for more libations and eats at the BIG Bar at the Hyatt Hotel (151 East Wacker Drive), where we’ll arrive around 7:00 pm. Around 8:00 we'll head back to Sweetwater via a different route, completing the circuit, arriving by 8:30.
