Description

Camping at Chain O Lakes State park. It's about 60 miles from Chicago. We will head up there July 2nd and hopefully get a campsite. At this point no reservations are available to be made and we are hoping to get one of the first come, first serve spots. It's likely as most of their campsites are non-reservable.

Once there we can rent canoes and other boats, bike to farms, hike, fish, etc.

We will meet at California and Lawrence to ride up from the city. One thing to note is that bikes are NOT allowed on the Metra due to the Taste of Chicago. We are not planning on having a gear car this time, so we'll have to be prepared to schlep our stuff both ways....unless you want to wait until the 7th to ride the Metra back when the Taste ends.

Here is the route that I'm going to be following:
As for the route, I did a rough map:

Here are the general turns and I mapped it on Gmaps pedometer as well: "here"

I didn't do all of the curves, so it's probably between 55-60 miles.

N. on Norht Shore bike path
N. On St. Mary’s rd.
W. on Oak Spring Road Curves and end up on N. Sand Stone
W. on Winchester
N. on Harris
W. on Belvidere (path by road)
N. On Atkinsin
W. on Trail by Washington, continue on Washington
N. On Cedar Lane Rde
W. on Golf View Rode
N. on Kildeer
W. on Lake Shore Drive
To W. on Chain O Lakes Bike Path (follows Rollins Rd.

This sounds like a lovely trip. Yay, bike camping. Sign me up for the next one. I've committed to watching fireworks and caring for some pets this weekend.

Matt and I will be riding up Friday. We're meeting @ 9:00 AM @ the Wilmette Metra, if people want to ride with us.

Hey all,
I just talked to Melissa Simon, and she's like to come up on Friday. Jamie, can you post the map and how we're getting there so that folks know the route when they come up later than us? Sweet! See you all at the campsite!
XOXO
Hannah

Okay, since I'm going to be out late tomorrow night I tried to get my camping stuff ready to go tonight. I also got my front rack installed today. I'm going to be leaving at 5 am from California and Lawrence. I do have a 2 person tent, so I could share, though it will be cozy. Here is what I'm taking:

Rain Gear (jacket and pants)
Misc. Clothes

Rear Pannier 2
Sleeping bag
Sleeping pad
Majority of clothes

Front Pannier 1
Cooking pan
portable stove
Fuel canister
Wash Clothes (around fuel)
Food (just a little)

Front Pannier 2
Insect Spray
Sunscreen
Toiletry bag
In Dry sack:
crank radio/flashlight
Book
Reading light
Cell phone charger,

In top of bag:
cell phone
Camera
Maps

Seat bag:
Tools, pump, CO2, tube, patch kit.

Any other suggestion for things to take?

Sounds fun! I can't make it, but I've camped there a couple times via Metra and bike and it's a fun place to stay. Be sure to rent a canoe and paddle out to Blarney Island, a floating Parrothead (Jimmy Buffet fan) bar!: http://www.blarneyisland.com/
