Description

There's been a ride to the Three Floyds brew pub in Munster, IN, every January since 2006, and the beer is great ("there are few places more exciting from a beer lover's perspective", says the NY Times), and the food, too, but January weather, ugh! We'll leave the clock tower at 10, pick up South Siders at the 31st Street beach house at 10:45, take a short break at Wolf Lake, have lunch at Three Floyds, and return. Those who are interested may want to stay for the brewery tour at 3. Going, we'll take the Daniel Burnham Centennial Century route, coming back, the traditional winter route. (A quick-and-easy alternative way back: ride just 10 miles to Flossmoor Station and hop the Metra.) This will be a joint ride with the Chicago Cycling Club. It will be a "tour" ride with few stops. We won't necessarily stay together. The intended pace is 16-20 mph, but faster riders may go ahead and slower riders may drop back. It's probably better if we all don't all arrive and try to order at the same time, anyway. Bring money, a lock, snacks to have en route, and panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago. Anyone interested is more than welcome to meet us at the brew pub if they don't care to participate in the bike ride. The inaugural Three Floyds ride, on January 14, 2006, was conceived and organized by Mark Sinclair. He died April 14 of that year after suffering a brain aneurism.

Jamie, you're too kind. Gayle, we missed you. There's nothing like a bike ride (exercise during the day) for jet lag. Yep, hoping to make it in January!

Great ride. Bob is the best tour leader ever.

Niall, thanks for not being deterred by the rain. I enjoyed riding and talking about beer with you and Sten. Thank him again for that Chocolate City the next time you see him!

Larry, you'll have another chance in January, when T.C. leads the traditional winter expedition. Did you at least get some good beer at your niece's birthday?

I'm glad we slogged through the morning rain; it was a lot of fun. Thanks for organizing it, and it was swell meeting you.

Would love to do this but I'll be in the 'burbs for my niece's birthday.

Excellent, thanks! I also get lost easily =)

I think so, except for one turn we can go over beforehand. I'll give everyone a cue sheet. Plus there are links to the routes above, you can print those out and even use Google Maps for more detail.

I've been curious about since I moved back to Chicago. I'm neither fast, nor spectacularly fit. Will the routes be fairly easy to suss if I get dropped?

Excellent. I will give moderation a try on Friday and plan to make it to the clock tower Saturday morning.

Never heard of FBC and looked it up. That sounds fun, too! The route's all paved, so your tires should be happy.
