Description

With spring possibly springing early this season, I think it's time to schedule my Annual Spring Ride to Two Brothers Roundhouse in Aurora.

The meeting point:

  • 9:00 AM at UIC and Halsted station to take the Blue line to Forest Park then ride the IPP to Aurora and drink and eat lunch at Two Brothers Roundhouse. We will leave no later than 9:15 on the Blue Line toward Forest Park
  • 10:00 AM at Forest Park Blue Line station
  • If you are riding all the way from the city, then please make sure you make one of the above meeting point.
  • Call/Text me if you're running behind

Bring water and snacks for the trip there, a jacket to keep you dry and warm. Plus, you are responsible for fixing your own bike mishaps - bring spare bike tubes, tires, pump, tire levers and whatever else you'll need to get you up and going again.

Route:

We'll take the Illinois Prairie Path. This will be a gravel ride for ~30 miles. Bring a cross bike or a gravel grinder bike or even a mountain bike! If you've got a road bike with tires thinner than 700x28, I'm sorry! I guess you can follow the proposed paved route - which we took last year and meet us there.

The ability to maintain a minimum average of 10-12 mph on your bike is required and is a an expectation that we will need to be met. If you are slower, you may be able to ride with slower riders and are responsible to get there on your own. This ride is really meant to go on the IPP and it will be dirty. Some part will be un-ridable and must be walked!

The lunch crowd should be dying down by 1 PM and we'll have some time to enjoy our food and possibly a bomber or two before heading back to Chicago.

Some will take the train back to Union Station and some will choose to ride back. You are free to do either - Bring bungy cord. I'll ride back!

Metra will run every two hours from 2:20 - 8:20 pm. After that, the last run will be at 11:20

Or ride back with me on the IPP just to get more miles. We'll see.

On a side note ... there's a lot of RSVPs so if most show up we'll need to stagger trains. Or some can ride 11 miles up the Fox River trail to Penrose to grab a few bonus beers and catch 4:37 or 6:37 trains back from Geneva.

Thanks Will! I'm totally cool with that. Knowing that a lot of us are using this as a warm-up ride for Barry Roubaix, this is a very reasonable pace.

If you are of the opinion this pace is too fast for you, I'd recommend posting a message here and seeing if you can buddy-up with others that prefer a more leisurely pace.

I've made modifications to the description, so there is no mistake on the expectation of this ride. We will mostly ride fast and yes, there maybe some parts that are not rideable and must be walked, but we will ride on the IPP and continue to meet or surpass the minimum average speed.

Argh — OOT (Out Of Town).

This is also Pi Day, so we should somehow incorporate pie or pizza pie into it somehow!

Yep, it will be dirty by the time we get done! The ride back should be even better!

Bring lights!

Because the surface is crushed limestone, the IPP is not plowed west of Elmhurst.  Currently, the path is frozen and snowed over. As snow melts next week, it might get very "soupy" and soft on 3/15.  Be prepared.

It's too far out to tell yet, but the weather is taking a turn for the better next week.  I'm hopeful that we could have some decent weather for this.  Yeah!!!

Is this good event for a 1st timer...? I am going to Barry Roubaix as well. 24 milers... again, 1st timer, taking it easy... This will be a good practice for me :-)
