Hey all, this is a friend who I grew up with speaking about her recent tour of Central and South America by bike.
This is the same series that George Christensen speaks at after his trips, fyi. George helped Ariel prepare for her trip as well.
Join, Ariel Kiken, from West Rogers Park, for a presentation on her cycling adventure through
Central & South America. In March, 2008 she embarked on her journey flying to Mexico City with
her bicycle in tow; from there, she started the journey that would take her through Honduras,
El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Columbia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia,
Argentina, and Brazil. Over the next year and a half she spent time in the tiniest of villages to
huge metropolises of Latin America, taking every opportunity to meet new people, see new
places, and experience different traditions and cultures, camping along the way. Ariel spent time
studying Spanish and Portuguese, and volunteering with a variety of social and environmental
community projects. She cycled through tough terrain seeing places unlike anything she had
ever experienced—high altitudes, buggy jungles, and isolated deserts—and learning a way of life
that was a little bit slower and more inviting to a stranger on a bicycle.
