Heres' the long story:
"A Voice for Luca" will benefit Luca Olson, a 9-year-old whose challenges with cerebral palsy include an inability to verbalize. The youngster, who lives next door to the Mars Gallery, has successfully overcome this obstacle by mastering an computerized, book-sized device that, via a touch-screen, "speaks" for him.
Luca's progress recently hit a roadblock, though, when the device was lost en route from Chicago to school. "It costs $8,000 new, which his mother and I just don't have," says Josiah, a masseuse. Elena is a nurse. "We were able to find a used one on e-Bay for about half the cost, but, honestly, between the economy and all the other costs of caring for a child with cerebral palsy, it's a hard debt to manage." All of the proceeds from this benefit will go directly to a new communications box for Luca.
