Description

Join us for 13th annual Perimeter Ride of Chicago!

Buckingham Fountain. Ride meets at 8 am and promply leaves at 8:30 am

This is a moderately paced ride so leave your scorcher at home.

We will be meeting at the Buckingham Fountain and head south, then west, then north, then east and finally south again encompassing the vast perimeter of one of the greatest cities in the world, Chicago!

This is a (near) century! Bring a bike that is in good working order and has decent tires on it, the south and west sides have some glass issues that are beyond our control. Bring plenty of water and clothing that you can layer up with when the sun goes down. Finally bring cash for the food stops. This ride ends after dark. If you are planning to ride the whole thing, PLEASE ALSO BRING LIGHTS.

There isn't a route posted anywhere. The anticipation builds...

Is there a route posted anywhere? I didn't see on FB. Thanks all. CANNOT WAIT!

Last year was my first Perimeter Ride, and I was concerned about whether I'd be able to make the distance and/or keep up. I needn't have been - with all the stops, the ride feels more like a handful of 20 mile rides than a really long ride.

I think anyone who rides regularly should have no real problems. If anyone delays the group, it'll be more likely due to mechanical issues than an inability to keep up. My advice - do it, it's such a fun ride! Get your bike checked out first if you're not sure of its mechanical condition. Bring snacks - there are lots of food stops, but I remember being really glad I had cookies and apples in my pannier last year at around the 60 mile mark.

2013 was 81.8 miles RT, averaging 9.9mph while in motion, 15.6hrs net.

2012 was 70.7 miles (I dropped off at home, 10mi short of RT), averaging 11.4mph while in motion, 16.3hrs net.

In addition to the above, I recommend sunscreen and spare tube.

It is very definitely a casual urban ride. Here's what I wrote last year in response to a vey similar question:

The pace of the Perimeter Ride has been, at times during it's storied history, excruciatingly moderate. This year, we are attempting to cut back a bit on frequency and duration of stops, with the hope of getting the group to the finish line at or before midnight. As in past years, the organizers have no control over unexpected mechanical or medical issues. No one will be left behind, but participants should have some experience and comfort with riding on city streets. For those who feel truly pooped out, there are numerous Metra and/or CTA options to get you back to the Loop (@ 25, 35, 45, 65, and 80 mile distances right off the top of my head). Throw in several stops for beer, food, and ice cream, totaling 5 hours or so, and you get the picture. Your instincts are sound-it really is (mostly) a fun time.

+1 Chelsea's question. Is this a no-drop road group ride with a paceline or is this a more casual urban ride?

This sounds awesome! Can you provide any more info on what "moderately paced" means? I'd love to come but don't want to slow anyone down.

Here is what David and I mapped for the first chunk on the pre-ride yesterday. Here is the first major leg that we rode yesterday: To Argus via S. Lake Shore Dr., the new trail just on the other side of the IN border and through downtown Hegewisch.

I might be able to make the morning leg.  I also might still be willing to co-lead a second non-official perimeter the the following weekend, but I don't know if I can make any of the pre-rides yet.
