Description

There's been a ride to the Three Floyds brewpub in Munster, IN, every January since 2006. The beer is great ("there are few places more exciting from a beer lover's perspective", says the NY Times), and they take their cuisine as seriously as they do their beer.

Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers (and other riders) from the swift completion of their appointed "rounds". We depart Daley Plaza at 8:00 AM and collect riders at Promontory Point at 8:45 AM. I like to get there before they open at 11 (it's still the fourth-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). After we complete our rounds, we may be less swift, so there are different return options: 40 miles total if you ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra, 45 if you ride to 93rd and take the Metra or to 100th and take the J14, 50 if you ride to 71st and take the J14, 60 if you ride both ways.

The fine print: There is no support vehicle. You are responsible for yourself. The pace is 12-15 mph with a short break at 7-Eleven. January weather can be extreme. Be prepared for cold as well as flats/mechanical problems.

Checklist:
▢ Water and snacks to have en route
▢ Lights
▢ Lock
▢ Pump, tube, tools
▢ Extra layers of clothing (more than you expect to need)
▢ Money
▢ Government-issued ID
▢ Panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago

Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Metra Electric train schedules, Jeffrey Jump (J14) bus schedule, Bikes on the Metra, Bikes on the Bus, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

new since last time:

  • 500# Super Sack
    5.5% ABV 78 IBU $5 Imperial Pint

Aroma is a blend of tropical fruit (pineapple) and citrus with lighter notes of melon, grape, and papaya. Flavor starts off with a juicy sweetness and finishes bitter and crisp. Medium-Light Body.

  • Necron 99
    7.3% ABV 61 IBU $5 Half Pint

    An interplanetary IPA

  • Burn ’Em Come Alt Me Bruh
    8.3% ABV $5 Half Pint

We took a traditional German style Altbier and turned it into a Double Altbier- slightly smoky.

  • Sun King Ring of Dingle
    7.3% ABV $5 Imperial Pint

Ring of Dingle is named after a scenic road network in Ireland that starts in the city of Dingle and eventually loops back, returning to Dingle. Ring of Dingle is as dark as night. It has a surprisingly light body and a thick, creamy head. It’s flavor is rich and roasty with a clean dry finish.

  • Boneyard Bone-A-Fide
    5.5% ABV 38 IBU $5 Imperial Pint

This West Coast style Pale Ale is brewed for a big hoppy finish. Golden to copper in color. The malts used to create the beer will balance nicely with some of the Yakima Valley’s most bonafide hop varieties: Cascade, Centennial & Chinook. The floral aroma should jump out of the glass thanks to the copious quantities of hops used in the dry hop process. If you are a "hop head", hop on!!!

and at 18th street:

  • Here Comes the Wolf Old Ale

    8.5% ABV
    22oz Bottle $ 10.00 13oz Draft $ 5.00 5oz Draft $ 3.00

no worries, the march could be pretty interesting, too

Sorry, Bob. Wife asked me yesterday if I was going to the Women's March. Change in plans. Cheers.

a protest, how exciting!

Comment by Steve A on January 19, 2017 at 6:25am

Oops.  Just read the info above - leave Daley at 8:00, not 7:30.

Where do you join up to the lake shore path? I take it you arrive at about 7:45?

Bob, as an FYI, there is a large protest planned for Saturday. While the protest is not scheduled until 10am or so, it might impact our meetup point downtown.

of course anyone can leave anytime, and it might be faster to ride to flossmoor and take the metra.
