Description

There's been a ride to the Three Floyds brewpub in Munster, IN, every January since 2006. The beer is great ("there are few places more exciting from a beer lover's perspective", says the NY Times), and they take their cuisine as seriously as they do their beer.

Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers (and other riders) from the swift completion of their appointed "rounds". We depart Daley Plaza at 8:00 AM and collect riders at Promontory Point at 8:45 AM. I like to get there before they open at 11 (it's the fourth-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). After we complete our rounds, we may be less swift, so there are different return options: 40 miles total if you ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra, 45 if you ride to 93rd and take the Metra or to 100th and take the J14, 50 if you ride to 71st and take the J14, 60 if you ride both ways.

The fine print: There is no support vehicle. You are responsible for yourself. The pace is 12-15 mph with a short break at 7-Eleven. January weather can be extreme. Be prepared for cold as well as flats/mechanical problems.

Checklist:
▢ Water and snacks to have en route
▢ Lights
▢ Lock
▢ Pump, tube, tools
▢ Extra layers of clothing (more than you expect to need)
▢ Money
▢ Government-issued ID
▢ Panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago

Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Flossmoor Metra Electric train schedule, 93rd St Metra train schedule, Jeffrey Jump (J14) bus schedule, Metra policy, CTA guide, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

It seems that we may have a tail wind, how nice would that be.

new since last time:

  • WiseBlood
    8.6% ABV 68 IBU $5 Tulip

"I listen to few and I'm fueled by fire." Wood-Aged Baltic Porter

  • Floyderbilt & Boggefeller
    6.6% ABV 82 IBU $5 Imperial Pint

Pale Ale brewed with Australian hops.

plus great guest taps:

  • Warpigs Lazurite
    6.8% ABV 70 IBU $5 Tulip

Lazurite is a bright and juicy IPA at 70 IBUs and 6.8% ABV. It's one of WarPigs' brewpub flagship beers brewed in collaboration at 3 Floyds. Kyle Wolak, their Head Brewer, joined us here in Munster to forge this tasty brew!

  • Sierra Nevada Otra Vez
    4.5% ABV $5 Imperial Pint

Prickly pear cactus flourishes in the state’s arid deserts, and grapefruit fills the Central Valley’s flats. Together their fruity-tangy blend makes Otra Vez, whose tartness is true to the gose style, pop with character.

  • Against the Grain/Arizona Wilderness Beer Aged Barrel
    6.7% ABV $6 Tulip

Brown ale fermented with an entire oak barrel

  • Southern Tier 2xPRESSO
    7.5% ABV $5 Half Pint

2xStout is considered by many to be a perfect milk stout. They started with that in mind, and added espresso beans and lemon peels for a true Italian style pick-me-up. The result is a stout so black, so rich, so creamy, it’d be at home in a café along a cobblestone street in some neighborhood in Rome.
