There's been a ride to the Three Floyds brewpub in Munster, IN, every January since 2006. The beer is great ("there are few places more exciting from a beer lover's perspective", says the NY Times), and they take their cuisine as seriously as they do their beer.
Neither snow nor rain nor sleet nor gloom of night stays these couriers (and other riders) from the swift completion of their appointed "rounds". We depart Daley Plaza at 8:00 AM and collect riders at Promontory Point at 8:45 AM. I like to get there before they open at 11 (it's the fourth-best brewery in the world, so sometimes there's a line). After we complete our rounds, we may be less swift, so there are different return options: 40 miles total if you ride to Flossmoor Station and take the Metra, 45 if you ride to 93rd and take the Metra or to 100th and take the J14, 50 if you ride to 71st and take the J14, 60 if you ride both ways.
The fine print: There is no support vehicle. You are responsible for yourself. The pace is 12-15 mph with a short break at 7-Eleven. January weather can be extreme. Be prepared for cold as well as flats/mechanical problems.
Checklist:
▢ Water and snacks to have en route
▢ Lights
▢ Lock
▢ Pump, tube, tools
▢ Extra layers of clothing (more than you expect to need)
▢ Money
▢ Government-issued ID
▢ Panniers for beer you can't get in Chicago
Online resources: Google map, cue sheet, Flossmoor Metra Electric train schedule, 93rd St Metra train schedule, Jeffrey Jump (J14) bus schedule, Metra policy, CTA guide, and, to save a minute at the start, the nifty online CCC waiver.

frank, too bad. get healthy and see you next month!
oh, and new (at least for me) @ FS:
Ghost Freight Coffee Stout
6.0% abv, 28 IBU
Ghostly dark and full bodied, poured on nitro for a smooth feel and brewed with Brazilian coffee for that beautiful roasted character. Made to be paired with red meats and chocolate desserts.
Loco Wheelslip Belgo IPA
5.4% abv, 77 IBU
Similar to a burnout when the locomotive accelerates without movement the train may do what's called a WHEELSLIP leaving behind several dents on the steel track by melting it due to extremely high temperatures caused by friction. Hopped with a blend containing seven different hop varieties and fermented with precious Belgian yeast, the result is a fruitier version of an American IPA.
frank, looks like they have:
the 6-packs, except maybe Zombie Dust, now a cult beer, you can usually get in chicago. i was going to say the bombers you can't, but beermenus says there are in fact closer places to go for WiseBlood and Blot Out the Sun.
let's see, millennium by 4 mans 3:10 from flossmoor, should be doable. and no riding back into the wind.
alex, note downtown start.
everyone, note the tradition isn't to set off right away. meeting @ 7:30, riding @ 8.
and of course bring a glass.
Bob, yes i mean going down. I am thinking due to the cold i would like to take the train back. It would be great if we could get back to the city by 4.
Mostly sunny, with a high near 32. North northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
going down, you mean?
