A 70-year-old man bicycling downtown was killed in a traffic accident Monday afternoon.
At about 5:20 p.m., the cyclist was heading northbound in the 1400 block of South Museum Campus Drive when he hit a parked truck, according to a police notification.
The man was taken to Northwestern Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the truck was issued a citation for no parking/standing.

I keep wondering about the missing pieces to this story, since it seems obvious that some critical elements are missing.
Here are some statements from witnesses.

This seems like a truly sad tale that is still a bit of a mystery. Is thee any indication that Mr. Sawicki had a health issue such as a stroke or heart attack? He was an experienced cyclist who was familiar with the area. He was a fast rider but did not appear to be a wannaLance who would fly by with his head down. Was he surprised by the location of the truck? Was there a pedestrian, a flock of birds, or other reason why he could not get by? There is no need to blame any of the actors including Mr.Sawicki but hopefully we can all get something from this tragedy to help guide the rest of us to pedal home safely after we encounter a similar circumstance. I can't help but think of Helmet Jahn, another experienced cyclist who lost his life recently. John, as always, thank you for your sober reporting on these issues.
His Strava app record shows that Museum Campus Drive was part of a route he rode regularly.
