How Do We Change Driver's "Indifference"? This Impacts Us All
We've all seen this - texting while driving, driving while distracted, and rolling through a stop sign. Sure, we as cyclists are under scrutiny for stop signs and lights (an argument for another day) but let's be honest, the impact of a car/SUV/truck is much worse.
CINCINNATI — Ninety percent of American drivers admit to risky driving practices, such as drowsy or drugged driving, running red lights, or texting while driving, according to new data released by AAA Thursday.
Ninety. Percent.
And it’s not just that they admit it, AAA said. It’s also that they don’t really care.
“It’s not that most drivers don’t know the difference between right and wrong, safe or unsafe,” AAA spokesperson Cheryl Parker said. “But there is a culture of widespread indifference, leading more and more people to pay a deadly price.
How do we change this?

If you notice this at particular times and/or intersections, perhaps the City is willing to do special enforcement at those places and times?

Another "maneuver" I see frequently (more recently? not sure about that) is a driver who pulls into an intersection knowing full well they aren't going to get through because of traffic ahead. They are stuck in the intersection and jam things up pretty effectively. It's not such a big deal for cyclists, as we can fairly easily weave around them. It's obviously more problematic for cars who now have the green light. Two intersections I notice this at are North and Wells (eastbound mostly, because La Salle is just a short block east), and Ardmore and Sheridan (both directions).

Do you go downtown? You are describing every intersection in the Loop/central business district during the evening rush.

Yeah, I work in the Loop, but I generally scoot out around 3:30, so I miss the worst of the traffic in the Loop proper.

I see this at Adams/Dearborn and Adams/State nearly every morning on my way to work.
At the State St. intersection, bus drivers are often part of the mix, pulling up even though the right lane is backed up, usually by car drivers waiting to turn right onto Dearborn.

LaSalle and Kinzie is another place where this commonly happens, with northbound LaSalle drivers blocking the box.

After last week, I'd seen it all, two cars getting stuck between the lowering gates of the Canal St. train crossing. I saw them both frantically inching away from the tracks as the Metra driver honked like mad. Since there was space between tracks and gate, the train didn't need to stop.

On my commute, Elston/Damen/Fullerton and Elston/Ashland/Armitage are really bad for cars blocking the intersection.

Yup. I'm the guy in my car with people honking at me and wondering why I am sitting at a yellow light or a light with 3 seconds left and it is clear that traffic ahead will not move and I do not want to be caught in the intersection.

I don't know how we change drivers' indifference, but wearing a Go-Pro or modeling "good behavior" by not executing Idaho stops will not change the general driving public's attitudes and hostilities.
