The Chainlink

This morning at Chicago & LaSalle around 10:20am. Lots of police and an ambulance. Anyone know what happened and if the rider is OK?

Is it me or is this stuff happening more?

Yo spence,

Give yourself more room from those cars, 1 ft from the parking lane is PRIME dooring real estate. (Sorry, I'm sure you know this.)

Moving further into the lane also helps to deter cars from trying to squeeze past you, passing unsafely.

My fiance almost got hit yesterday when a cab cut her off to grab a fair. She said it was the scariest thing that's ever happen to her. Today I was buzzed by a giant moving truck who then yelled at me for not "getting over further". This is a wide neighborhood street and I was riding about 1 foot from the parked cars.

Hope it wasn't a cyclist.

I love this info, thanks! Now I have something to sling back at these knowitall morons.

Also it was the League of American Wheelmen (Now Bicyclists) that originally successfully lobbied for the widespread implementation of paved roads. Prior to that, they were just bumpy dirt roads.

Rrright . . . How it never occurs to those fucking morons that both roads and bikes precede cars?

It would be nice to have this info in a pamphlet so we could give it to offenders while on the road or friends when they bring it up in conversations.

There is really no need to engage and there is rarely any benefit.  If you must, you can put it more simply.  "Its illegal for me to ride on the sidewalk. I am where I belong."  You can follow up with "deal" or "have a nice day" depending on your personality.

Will, thanks, but I normally give myself plenty of room for doors. I was approaching a red light (probably 30 yards out) and was going to pull over to the right side of the lane anyway... I saw this moving truck hauling ass towards me and he wasn't slowing down even with the red light so I moved over mostly out of courtesy and the ahole buzzed me.

When people say such things, what they really mean is something to the effect of, "This is mine, not yours." As such, I doubt historical information is going to make such a person think.

I agree with what you're saying, but the flyer would give me a chance to be super smug about it.

Which camera do you use? I'm sure there are more cyclists than before who are interested in recording their rides.

This morning a driver at the light on Lasalle (north of Kinzie) rolled down his window to tell me I should ride Dearborn, because there is a protected bike lane on Dearborn, and Lasalle is dangerous for bicycles.  I explained the PBL doesn't extend that far north, and that between people stopped in the bike lane, I spend about the same amount of time in the street, but he wasn't having any of it.  He told me he bikes all over this city all the time.

All the time... except... this morning, I guess.  This morning, he decided to get in a 3,540 lb car by himself, burn gasoline so my children and I will have something nicer to breath than Plain Old Air, and admonish me for riding on (what I gratefully now know) is the Wrong Street.

On Friday I was told (yelled at) by a guy in a jeep (with no doors so no rearview side mirrors) that I should move over, and my panniers are sticking way out.  I was on Washington going E off Des Plaines, right at the start of the N bus lane.  Not only was he riding behind me then passed me to get out of the bus lane...but my bars are wider than my panniers!

I have noticed that whenever someone driving a car is lecturing/arguing with someone on a bike, they will without fail mention that they "bike all the time", as if that somehow excuses their actions. I am almost positive that they are lying. Because if they truly did bike all the time, they would have:

  • Looked out the window before opening their car door.
  • Passed me with more than three feet of clearance.
  • Not parked in the bike lane.
  • Not done a number of any other dangerous actions that anyone who has ridden a bike in Chicago for more than five minutes would know not to do.

Next time someone claims they "bike all the time", call them out on their BS.

Heard the same thing from a guy buzzing the cyclist in front of me on Milwaukee a few months ago.  He got caught at a light, the guy he was buzzing stopped to call 911, and I pulled up to his window.  Asked him what the hell he thought he was doing.  "It's okay sweetie.  I'm not coming after you.  I bike all of the time."  Oh thank you, kind sir.  You only buzz some cyclists and bike all of the time.  Please pass go and collect $200.
