I have been parking in this spot since 2009, but never came out to see this:
I'm pretty sure the culprit is one of the large umbrellas used by the coffee shop at the corner, based on the scrapes with gray paint near my bike and big rubber mark on the umbrella. Plus the fact two employees said it hit my bike while the manager swears it didn't.
Assuming the frame's not damaged that's at least a new wheel, fork, crank, rings and chain. I know I'm lucky that this didn't happen in a crash and it's only money, but the adrenaline and anger is still running through me.

are friendly to allowing patrons to unlock to said fence while eating/drinking/bike cleats...
My main confusion in this is why does that Starbucks have umbrellas? The outdoor seating area is covered by the building.
Got a call today saying the head tube is twisted, so that's pretty much the majority of the bike. I managed to get a case opened at Starbucks but their customer line is, well, very busy.
Check out the nearby buildings for security cameras. It might have been recorded and you can ask to see if they will help you solve what caused the damaged to your bike.
It's best to do this ASAP, as retention period for security footage (before it's recorded over) is sometimes rather limited.

I already checked with DePaul security the day it happened and they let me review their footage. They have cameras on two corners of the intersection and a few more down the street, but just missed the area. All the cameras in Starbucks are watching the employees, not looking outside. Though their incident rep may know or have more access to that than I'm likely to get. I should be hearing from them by the end of the week, with enough time to get the estimate from the bike shop in writing.

Starbucks corporate office did not assume responsibility for the damage but extended a 'customer appreciation' credit (in the form of a check) that just about covers the new frame and components needed to have a working bike again, though I have to do the assembly work.
I bought another LHT frame but don't think the paint quality is as good as the 2011 frame. Still putting it together's been fun, and it gave me another chance to visit the Recyclery to use some tools I don't have. I'll have to go back again when I can ride it a bit and decide how much steering tube to cut off.
Hooray! That's a pretty good result! Glad to hear that Starbucks cut a check!
