Fender recommendations

I am beginning to shop for a set of (full) fenders.

 

I currently have planet bike cascadias (on an older bike) but would

like to hear what others use and like : pros and cons.

 

suggestions and comments welcome.

 

SKS Chromoplastics were mentioned...they look nice but I'm sure there

are other good choices too ?

SKS Longboards. Done. Longer than any other plastic fender I've seen, with built in mudflaps front and back. If you want shiny and more difficult to install then Velo Orange of any variety - started to see a lot of these around town the last year or two. I have had the steel ones on a bike for several years  and they have held up to a ridiculous amount of terrible abuse and neglect. If they get bent out of whack, just bend them back.

I'd rec something similar to SKS Longboards, too. For me, they are just a little too long, however. Velo Orange's look nice but can be difficult to install and it sucks when something comes loose and they start to get all rickety. Usually requires just a simple bolt tightening, but a nice looking plastic would be my choice over Velo Orange either way.

I like Cascadias, I like Longboards a little better. I'm not sure if their construction is the same as other SKS fenders, but standard SKS fenders can be almost absurdly resilient. I had an unfortunate roof rack / garage incident last week that left the rear fender on the bike folded in half between itself and the rear tire. Pulled it right back out, good to go. I do like the length on Lonboards, particularly in front.

I can heartily NOT recommend the Soma Fab fenders. They have a beautiful finish and somewhat nice mudguard attachments, but their attachment mechanism is crap. Mine broke (rear) within a month or two of installation. They also suffer from a very crappy adjustment ability. One can't adjust the length of the struts (or whatever they are called) at the fender, but can only adjust the angle of the mounting doohicky which, if it broke (as it did for me a every other installation of these fenders that I've seen) and one replaces it with a length of wood or something (really!) they can become quite finicky/impossible to adjust. Get some and you might end up riding a bike with only one fender:

On the other hand, I've had very good experience with SKS fenders. I just need them to make some in red!

I've been using Longboards since about October and they are nice, but have a file handy to cut down the stays.  Measure many times before trimming!

SKS Longboards are where it is at.

The VO fenders look great and are NOT that hard to install.

That bike looks familiar. Think I might have seen you once riding down Fullerton?

Also second the gripe with the lack of color options on fenders. What up wit dat?
