Received my first dooring and this was the result. Could have been worse.

Glad you are OK. Did you file a report?

Yes - glad to hear it wasn't worse. Large bruises like that can get more interesting looking over time. Keep us posted!

I'm glad it wasn't worse. If you noted the license plate number, time and location, you can still file a crash report at a police station.

Ouch!

Where did this happen?

Is that your left arm?  Were you doored by a passenger?

Looks painful, man.  Sorry.

He could have been doored by a car on the left side of a one-way street.

Looks nasty but yeah, could be worse. Here's to speedy healing.

Or he got doored from the right and went flying/landing to the left.

I don't mean to pry or make you all speculate.  I was just curious if this happened on one of Evanston's protected bike lanes.

Sounds like you were being cautious and smart and that was enough to get you through. Not sure what you mean by "drop the bike" but yes, dropping the bike and stepping away is a good move if there is a large enough fraction of a second available to do so.

Don't think in terms of your first dooring. Think of it as your only dooring. My one and only was 43 years ago. I was young and drunk and stupid and riding without lights. Don't start thinking like roadkill. Sounds to me like you're a capable rider.

Yeah it was the passenger. The car was stopped in the right lane at a traffic light and the passenger decided to get out there instead of pulling over to the curb.  Lucky for me I was going pretty slow as I usually do  in these kind of situations.  I didn't fly off the bike and was able to stay standing but I did drop the bike.

Totally understand your rage, been there looking like a lunatic also. Now if more ridership increases then more doorings will take place, then the car industry may have to change the way thier car doors open due to increasing reports of doorings.

ouch!  the situation should frighten this person not just you yelling obscenities.  hope this was a valuable lesson that real people get hurt when one doesn't check before opening a door into traffic.
