I was pleasantly surprised to see an announcement for the opening party for Heritage Bicycles General Store, Chicago's first bike shop / cafe, taking place Saturday, January 28, from 6 - 11 pm. I stopped by yesterday for a sneak peek and got to check out the new space. It's going to be one of this city's most attractive coffee houses, let alone bike shops: http://gridchicago.com/2012/grounds-for-celebration-chicagos-first-...
Keep moving forward,

Wow, this looks really cool.
Where is it?
I have been passing this place by on my commute for a few months now and was wondering when it would open for business. Thanks for the update.
Very close to On the Route but also very different. I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner after he found me peeking into the windows a week ago. Michael is super-nice and seems very committed to transportation cycling and to the local community. I gave him a little grief (in jest) for using Stumptown coffee from Portland, but how can you fault a guy who is using mechanics trained at West Town, bikes welded in Chicago, and hopes to have local beer as well (once he gets a license, I think)?
He's also committed to family cycling, which is great. He indicated that he has plans to release a kids bike and potentially a cargo bike but I assume that may take awhile since the shop has to get going. I look forward to grabbing some coffee during my commute since I pass right by there. If necessary, I also look forward to having a place to do a quick adjustment or get a tune-up during my commute!
He really seems to be offering something quite different from other bike shops in the area. I'm hoping he benefits from the generally upward trend in transit cycling, cold-weather cycling, cargo-biking, and family-cycling that I, at least, see happening in the city.
Between this place and Handlebar Cyclists are covered.
Yay! Beeeeeer! Maybe some local cider as well...

I would love to see a transportation minded kid's bike on the market. It's next to impossible to import them from Europe and more expensive than a brand new one to take away the knobbies and put on city tires, add fenders, rack, more comfortable bars, generator lights etc. I was able to score a perfect kid's city bike from Alex Wilson's frankenbike collection but it's never too early to start thinking about a 24".
Hmm as I frequent Belmont funny how I missed this?

Yay indeed! This place looks great - even if I rarely get that far north much anymore.
I'm dreaming about a new kind of easier to get - like very easy to get and isn't expensive liquor license that lets the holder dispense beer (or cider or mead?) if it was brewed within say 70 miles of Chicago. (Whatever the distance is to the MillerCoors brewery in Milwaukee minus ten feet.)

This looks awesome. Now I'm jealous of the folks who commute from farther up north than me;-)
Thanks guys! Tons of support in this city so far. Hope everyone comes out to the opening party next Saturday.
