The rebuilt Halsted Street bridge over the Chicago River's north branch canal is scheduled to open Friday, while the Halsted Street bridge over the north branch of the river will close for major repairs, the Chicago Department of Transportation said Wednesday.
The new tied-arch bridge over the canal will have two traffic lanes in each direction, up from the one lane before the reconstruction, CDOT said. It also will feature marked bike lanes. The bridge closed Nov. 30, 2010.
Crews also resurfaced Halsted from south of Division Street to North Branch Street and replaced 20 streetlights in the Goose Island neighborhood, CDOT said.
CDOT will add lighting early next year and resurface the intersection of Division and Halsted in the spring. The cost of the project is estimated at $13.6 million.
Meanwhile, the Halsted Street bridge over the north branch of the river will be rehabbed through next May, officials said. The more than 50-year-old Bascule bridge, just north of Chicago Avenue, will be outfitted with new floor beams and sidewalks.
Traffic will be rerouted during the project, which is estimated to cost $5 million, CDOT said.
