The Chainlink

Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)

My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.

Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane

With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming

#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)

#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.

We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

201 N Franklin St. 311 report submitted. Oh, my! It's a good thing the postal carrier didn't have to park in one of the dozens of available legal parking spots on the west side of the street, and have to navigate through the dangerous minefield!

Love it!

Something that crossed my mind...I don't know how feasible this would be, but in some neighborhoods, occasionally you'll hear about a "loiter party," in which residents gather in drug trafficking/gang hotspots and just....loiter, which would discourage criminal activity due to dozens of potential witnesses, and from what I understand, they're actually pretty successful.

Now...how doable would a "bike lane loiter" be?? That is, pick a time and date when a butt-ton of cyclists are available to basically jam the bike lanes, making it impossible for frequent motor vehicle violators to take over the spot???

People have done that in other cities. They call it a human-protected bike lane, or something to that effect.  Just “google it”!

Heh... sometimes I slow to barely a walk when a car is behind me in the bike lane. After a bit they get the idea.

I'd be in for this.

Sorry...doubling down...I guess this is your site and you can say what you want. I don’t have to accept it though. Not trolling- just saying I don’t appreciate your perspective. We can agree to disagree.

I’d ask you this...replace “white men” with another descriptor of another race and gender...does that seem right? Or is it the current popular political view?

I am actually shaking my head that we are having a dialogue like this.

All you predominately male cyclists out there...my sense is that at least some of you are Caucasian...are you okay with these comments? How about those of you that are not Caucasian...when will you be targeted as being obtuse, not open to others’ opinion?

Yes, I welcome disagreement and dialogue around it. Did you read the articles?

Privilege is an issue in our country and I'm standing here with the perspective of being surprised that you are surprised this comes up in discussion. Do we dance around who the slave owners were in our country because we are afraid to offend?

As I mentioned, there are men that are not a part of this but if you are not a white man and you see the cycling world, you quickly realize there's inequity in every aspect of cycling. Racing, advocacy, infrastructure planning, the day to day reality of shoaling, sexism all the way up to TdF in the way of exclusion and the dolled up podium "girls", and the now defunct InterBike had MANY examples of this.

I did not realize this existed back in 2011 when I got back into cycling but yes, I've seen it, I have experienced it, and I've seen proof of it. Did you know there are trolls that just ignore me (the only woman in the discussion) as if I have nothing relevant to say?

So I ask you this - please read those articles and try to look at the cycling world with empathy. Read articles about cycling inclusion/exclusion written by people of color and women. Do some googling. You can be mad at me but please, educate yourself on the topic first before coming to the conclusion that I am close-minded.

62% -- White Male fragility is not a good look. Just sayin'.

340 W Kinzie St. 311 report submitted. Well, I guess being attacked by a giant sewer squid is probably a good enough reason to stop in the protected bike lane. But only this one time.

300 N Wells St. 311 report submitted. 'Always got to love the illegal right turn from the bike lane.

225 N Franklin St. 311 report submitted.
