Share your pics, videos, streets, stories of what you find in the bike lane of the non-bike variety that has an impact on your ride and/or your safety. I've decided to keep it a little more open ended - cars, snow, buses, garbage, cabs, etc. If they shouldn't be in the bike lane, go ahead and add it to this thread. Please be safe if you are taking pics or video! :-)
My hope is that we can collectively build some evidence of what we see when riding in the city with the overall hope of better enforcement of "bikes only" and improving maintenance.
Update: More Hashtags to Capture Vehicles in the Bike Lane
With popular hashtags:
#BikeLaneShaming
#LaneSpreading (Chicago Bike Selling)
#ClearTheWay (ActiveTrans), there are many options to capture violations.
We think you should use ALL of them AND post your photos on The Chainlink. ;-)

This is just ridiculous... The city really needs to have the traffic enforcement out there writing tickets and tow notices. I think that would get some attention to this dangerous abuse of a traffic lane.
Currently, there is a huge issue in the Chicago media about food trucks parking outside of designated food truck zones. Yet, even though dangerous bike lane blockages like these have occurred every day since they were installed, the media doesn't care.
It's not like they don't know about the issue. Some of these pictures depict a TV news studio with an excellent view of the Dearborn lane, and a second TV news studio is right around the corner.
Southbound Milwaukee at Elston this morning. Really, you have to drop off the portapotties right during rush hour and block the bike lane? A little planning would go a long way here.
Once you cleared the portapotty truck, you had the opportunity to ride up the ramp of this truck on Milwaukee at Chicago.
It's nice to see that Summit Construction has done absolutely nothing about the trucks going to it's job site from parking in the bike lane after the death of a cyclist near the site. You would think if someone else broke a truck window at the same site doing the same thing, that the contractor would take measures to prevent this from happening again.
I was just reviewing some of my commute footage and realized that I forgot to post this.
Last week, on Monday, August 22, 2016, this Uber driver was driving his silver Chrysler 300 (IL plate G97 1580) northbound in the two-way Dearborn protected bike lane (at cross street Calhoun Pl).
He was driving about a quarter of the block in the bike lane, I was behind him yelling and he only hit his brakes started to turn onto the Dearborn car lanes when he noticed cyclists legally riding towards him in the southbound bike lanes.
I slapped on the roof of his car a number of times as I slowly rode by him on his right side just to make sure he was aware that I was next to his vehicle (not to damage the car in any way).
Snapped another several on Dearborn today. Here's the two worst:
Also emailed them to cleartheway@activetrans.org
When I asked the Thillens driver "Please don't block both bike lanes" he laughed and continued walking into the adjacent building, leaving the truck parked and unoccupied, forcing cyclists into traffic.
Looking close, I didn't see anything the ComEd trucks were actively working on right there that required the bike lane.
Has anyone tried blocking in the truck and calling police? I saw a video where a guy (unreasonably) did this with a bus after being tired of close passes. If the driver just doesn't care like that, perhaps if you delay them, get the police involved, and potentially a ticket, they may start to care.
While standing on the sidewalk at Dearborn and Lake I saw this. Why couldn't the van be parked in the open space next to the bike lane that was made for parking? Not sure. I guess driving with an M tag can lead one to feel a bit entitled. I doubt there was an emergency as the flashing light atop the van is amber and not red or blue.
Cornell University. The building on the right and the road were just completed this past year. Horrible brick design with this grading leaves piles of loose (caution!) cinders in the road after every rain, bad placement of vegetation that Cornell landscaping staff were very defensive about and refuse to cut (Planted too close to the bike lane!). We'll see---they will be trimmed. Guaranteed. This road, the building, brick and landscaping are all pretty new--after a more than a year of construction mess. Disappointed!
