Longtime Chicago bike advocate Waymond Smith is riding from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico

Good morning fellow Chainlinkers, here's a story on DNAinfo regarding my bike ride to raise funds for youth based biking programs. Please consider donating to this fundraiser.

Thank you

"Guys I knew were going to the gangs, but I wasn't there because I was always riding my bike," said Smith, who would peddle all over the South Side and to other parts of Chicago as a teenager.

Smith is now 63 years old. For decades, he's been a bike advocate, teaching youngsters how to ride and assemble their own bikes at Better Boys Foundation in North Lawndale andWorking Bikes in Pilsen.

And a few days after his 64th birthday, on Aug. 19, the South Shore resident will embark on an1,800-mile solo bike ride from Vancouver, Canada to Tijuana, Mexico to raise money for those organizations and others.

Waymond, thanks for posting the article. I am amazed by everything you do and have accomplished...

- Commuting from Hyde Park to Skokie

- Organizing all of us to donate tools for the Better Boys Foundation last year

- And now you are riding from Canada to Mexico to raise money for youth programs in Chicago

Thanks for being a Chainlinker and sharing your story as well as involving us in your work - even if it is in a small way. Please share as much as you can of your ride from Canada to Mexico. It sounds like it will be a beautiful ride and I'd love to hear all about it.

Thank you Yasmeen. I will be documenting the journey and will update the status of the ride.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it.

Yasmeen, I want to thank you for your generous donation to the Ride For The Borders fundraising ride.

Waymond, Any updates for us? :-) I hope your ride is going well and you are seeing lots of beautiful scenery.

Sadly, Waymond was hit by a car in California. If you can, please donate to his fundraising campaign:

UPDATE: With regret I must end the fundraising ride because I was hit by an automobile in Santa Cruz, CA

I sustained a broken collar bone as a result and cannot continue to complete this ride. I'm OK otherwise. I'm in a hotel that the hospital arranged I'm trying to make plans to come back home.
I want to thank all of my supporters and I will see you when i get home.
