So, this won't be a match to the rest of my components and that is okay for me. I just need a rear derailleur.

Ha! That would help.
Indexed.
Bike is a Novara. Whole darn derailleur snapped off while riding. Snapped the chain as well. I was lucky it did not get caught up in the wheel and pitch me into a car.
Any Shimano long cage would work.
make sure your derailleur hanger is intact and aligned. sounds like you might have issues based on your description
The hangar on the frame is fine. The derailleur hanger (the frame of the derailleur) snapped in half. Like it was pot metal or something.
If you don't put a derailer hanger alignment gauge on it, you do not know if the hanger is fine nor not. If the derailleur snapped off there is a very good chance the hanger is bent as well. If it is bent your bike will not shift properly.
Brand does matter, Sram and Shimano use different pull ratios.
Thanks, NDUG -
Turns out it is a Shimano Deore and the piece of metal that attached to the rear triangle is where it snapped off. I am unsure if the rear triangle part is broken, am still trying to figure that out. I suppose I should just run it over to REI (or RVB) since there may be a slim chance that it would have some level of warranty (i.e. against defects).
